The dream of the Red Chamber is one of the greatest novels in Chinese literature and we are proud to invite you to join us and enjoy the great art of Chinese culinary creations. Red Chamber was originally opened in Rosebank in 1989 but moved to Middle Mall (Cinema level) next to Standard Bank in Hyde Park Corner shopping centre in 1997. Head Chef, Emma Chan, believes that the reason for the restaurant's success is due to the belief that real food outlasts trendy food.
The interior at Red Chamber is modern Chinese and it's no surprise that red features as the dominant colour. Large bamboo sticks across green walls create the illusion of a bamboo forest and red draped curtains and traditional Chinese dividers add warmth and intimacy throughout the restaurant. The bar at Red Chamber is lit up with soft blue and green lights and rows of Chinese liquor bottles line the surface. Dark wood tables and chairs fill the restaurant and traditional Chinese sculptures stand guard at the entrance.
We believe in the personal touch. Although food should be consistent in quality, it should be allowed to vary according to the season and availability of products. Sauces, pastries, bread and noodles are all made in house to guarantee quality. We encourage our guests to share a variety of dishes, especially unique dishes. A good Chinese meal must attain a harmony of taste, texture, colour and aroma, which can only be achieved by sharing a selection of dishes; each distinctive and contributing to the diverse flavours. The menu is carefully designed and the aim is to offer a multitude of familiar dishes and a few new dishes. A couple of our favourites dishes include the Peking Duck served with pancakes, cucumber and a plum sauce, and the Tiger Salad.
The restaurant sees families returning to Red Chamber time and time again and diners who visited the restaurant as kids are now returning with their own children.
