Tomo Japanese Restaurant is a delightful and authentic new Asian fusion eatery located on the corner of Loop and Shortmarket Street in Cape Town’s CBD. The owner and Chef David, is always in his store overseeing the kitchen and his team of chefs and personally welcoming guests. The interior is modern and clean with lovely traditional touches and encompasses a separate tea ceremony and tasting area upstairs which is available for functions.

Open from Monday to Saturday from 12 noon to 9:30pm this beautifully designed restaurant is welcoming and comfortable with its light and bright interior and cozy seating areas. Being centrally located it is exceptionally suitable for lunches in terms of its interior and mouth-watering choices for a lighter midday meal.

There are some bench seat areas as well as intimate tables throughout. To ensure that the dishes are authentic various herbs and spices are imported from the East. The fresh selection of tea leaves is another of the chef’s imports and he has a selection of imported crockery for sale so that patrons can enjoy tea ceremonies at home.

The restaurant has become famous for Robata or Japanese style Braai as well the Chef’s Bento Box which is composed of his favourite dishes, Miso Soup and a hot beverage for R180 during lunch or R200 during dinner. Popular starters are Agedashi Tofu (deep fried tofu in dashi sauce), Tomo Sashimi (6 sushi pieces with toppings like ginger, garlic, spring onion, red onion, sesame oil, red chili and ponzu) and Chawan Mushi (steamed egg custard with chicken, prawn and vegetables.

For mains the Teppanyaki is a firm favourite and the choices are beef fillet, chicken, salmon or fresh crayfish! If you’re choosing Robata the Mongolian style Lamb or Salmon Miso – Yuanyaki (miso marinated salmon) are excellent choices. The sushi selection is fantastic and apart from the usual choices selection there are some unusual varieties available that very few restaurants offer. Sushi Tako (octopus) or Sushi Saba (marinated mackerel) are available at Tomo but not easily found elsewhere. The Signature Rolls are also highly recommended.

Lastly the dessert selection is small but superb. Green Tea Ice Cream is served with Red Bean Paste. Or you can choose Black Sesame Ice Cream. Both can be followed by a refreshing cup of freshly brewed tea. Ask chef for his recommendation in-store.
