Hong Restaurant is centrally located in Claremont, a short walk from Cavendish Square, in the Stadium on Main Centre. Situated on the Upper Ground floor the restaurant has interior seating and a large exterior seating area in the mall. The hands-on owner Helen Hong and her GM Vicky manage this establishment superbly with their attention to detail. Helen has been running the store for over a decade and proudly overseas the food preparation to ensure that it meets her very high Chinese standards. The restaurant opens at 7:30am daily and the kitchen closes at 9:30pm but the bar area stays open until late.
The extensive, extremely reasonably priced menu is an absolute treat to peruse making it difficult to make a selection as one is very spoilt for choice. It features at least 6 soups, 6 types of spring rolls and Pop (battered, bite- size pieces deep fried and served with a dip-in sauce) as well as numerous other choices. Satay, Sushi Salads and Tempura options are available as well as Seafood and Seafood Combos, Seafood Platters and Teppanyaki. Delightful Thai Curries, Chef’s Specials, Prawn & Fish, Chicken & Duck, Beef & Lamb and Rice & Noodles dishes are on offer at an average price of R65 for a main course.
The sushi selection is no less extensive and includes Maki, California Rolls, Fashion Sandwiches, Hand Rolls, Sashimi, Nigiri and a fabulous choice of Chef’s Specials and an even bigger selection of Sushi Platters ranging from R75 to R154 except for the fancy Yellow Platter for R387 which is ideal for a large party or a function or event.
As the exterior seating area is separated from the main thoroughfare it is an ideal location for a special occasion involving larger groups requiring a seating arrangement separate to the main restaurant area. The main restaurant has a bar area as well as a separate, small enclosed and private section, also suitable for events that are smaller in terms of numbers. Additionally the restaurant has a sushi counter with limited seating but sushi can be served throughout.
All the restaurant areas are spacious apart from the private section and sushi counter and there is plenty of space between the tables. The decor is simple and features comfortable chairs as well as wooden tables, laminate wood flooring and some carpeted areas. Hong is highly recommended for authentic Thai, Sushi and Seafood so bear this restaurant in mind when you’re next in the Claremont area.
