After visiting Calitzdorp twenty years ago, restaurateur Marinda fell in love with the quaint charm of Die Dorpshuis. This pipe-dream soon turned into reality when she became one of the co-owners to this historic bed and breakfast and restaurant. Following months of hard work, love and care, Die Dorpshuis was restored to its former glory. Today, locals enjoy uncomplicated, homemade meals; prepared using fresh ingredients.
The biggest drawcard to the eatery is the large, beautiful garden. Referred as ‘a little farm glen’, guests enjoy sitting on the outside terrace, surrounded by the lush vegetation and towering trees. The walls of the interior are painted a warm red hue, creating a comfortable and intimate dining experience.
For breakfast, indulge with a traditional fry-up; the ‘Breakfast Platter’. This dish provides you with all the protein and energy you might need to start the day; and comprises of two eggs, bacon, tomato, mushroom, and two slices of bread served with jam and butter. Accompany your meal with freshly squeezed orange juice or a hot cup of coffee.
The not-so-hungry can enjoy a stuffed baked potato; this starter is smothered in a creamy mushroom, cheese and ham filling. Alternatively, opt for a sizeable ostrich burger, served with a side salad or some crispy chips. To optimise the taste of your meal, add a spicy pepper or mushroom sauce.
Patrons who are looking to try out the local cuisine should opt for one of Die Dorpshuis’ speciality meals. A firm favourite among the locals is the ‘Traditional Bobotie’, served with a tomato sambal and condiments. If you like a bit of spiciness added to your food, the Traditional Lamb Curry will tantalise your taste buds. Keep space for dessert, as there is a selection of delectable, home bakes to choose from; or if you’re looking for an after-dinner drink with a bit of a kick to it; opt for a Dom Pedro.
