The Hussar Grill - Steenberg

My wife and I had dinner here last night. Everything was superb!! My wife enjoyed a delicious 200g Fillet and I tucked into an 800g Tomahawk!!! We managed to make some room for desserts which were equally good! A big plus is the great service we received from our waiter Luyanda!!!

Tonight was our first time visiting the Hussar Grill....oh boy! Just what have we been missing? We were drawn in by their Date Night Special ...the sherry infused peri-peri chicken livers were simply sublime, the sirloin steak, perfection on a plate...calamari strips...just right and the beer battered hake and mushy peas - exceprionally delicious for a steakhouse. Our waitron, Joyce, was delightful. Friendly, present, knowledgeable and able to give excellent advice and recommendations. We felt like royalty! The highlight of the evening was the Belgian chocolate vodka martini....that alone will draw us back to date night next week (Wish we could do Date Nights every night!!)

Visited with high expectations based on a previous experience but I was disappointed.To be fair, what was good was the service. The food is what let it down. Food - the menu is extensive, perhaps too extensive? Our steaks were tough and parts were not really edible. My son had the ribs, they looked nice. I had the fried halloumi as a main. There was so much butter it actually took away from the flavor. The veggies to go with it were so tired, it was not very nice.I wouldn’t go back in a hurry.

Let me be clear. I'm not a "Specials" person. Inevitably, the specials are disappointing and the old adage "price is what you pay, value is what you get" holds true; so I stick to a menu.Last Sunday we decided, on the spur of the moment, to go for a "Cheap & Cheerful" and thought we'd try the Hussar Steenberg special - R130 for a two course meal. The food is always excellent but, frankly, we were not expecting fireworks. Well, we were blown away. The experience was a pleasant surprise in every respect. We started with spicy chicken livers - and we could've left after that - simply delicious; the best we've had in years. The calamari strips were crisply fried, not oily and cooked to a turn.The portions were generous - normal starter portions, no "special" down-sizing or cutting corners.We ordered a rump and fish & chips for the mains. Again, exactly the same as their standard portions.... the steak was as it should be: well-matured, properly trimmed beef, grilled to temperature - perfect! The fish was lightly battered, not oily and served with mushy peas- delicious. No bull, just honest, yummy food.When the special ends, remember how hard the owner has worked to keep an evening out affordable.. and it doesnt need to bust the bank in future. We went back tonight and had a burger- brilliant. We love good food. It is one of our "spoils".The owner, Jason, doesn't know us other than as very occasional diners. He clearly practices his craft and loves what he does. He wasnt even there on Sunday, so it clearly works just as well in his absence which is a credit to his team. Thank you for an exceptional "special" experience.

Looking for a great steak and a good bottle of wine that wont break the bank go no further the Hussar Chain will not disappoint and you know you'll be back.

I’ve had a meal here before and it was excellent.. however tonight I was mislead by the restaurant as well as their web sight. I went for a meal just before 21:00 and got turned down by staff and management. Very disappointing as the restaurant clearly says that it’s open until 23:00. Early night for the staff I guess.

The Hussar Grill in Steenberg serves the best steak in Cape Town in my opinion. It caters for families as it is a large restaurant and has a small outside section. My daughter had a chicken dish which she said was excellent and both my husband and my steaks were cooked to perfection. The staff are excellent, being both friendly and efficient. It is also the only restaurant I know where you can bring your own wine and not pay corkage.

I truly believe I had the best steak of my life last friday evening.As I put my fork into my meat it felt like a marshmallow, it was so tender.The ambience was awesome even with loadshedding for majority of our meal.Our waiter was fantastic. Looking after all our needs.A fantastic meal. Well done Hussar
