The Hussar Grill - Morningside

First time here for dinner. Wife and I went for the Tuesday Date special currently on promotion. Great value, food and service. Starter, Main course, Chocolate Vodka Martine dessert and a bottle of Hussar Grill Red wine, all for R350 per couple. We calamari and chicken livers for starters, rump and sirloin steak for mains. It's a limited menu selection but well worth it.

Waiter was awesome, sirloin was disappointing (lots of sinew) and tough, seemed to have changed blue cheese sauce, coffee was terrible. Cheese cake was amazing. Something has changed at Hussar Morningside.

We loved the Hussar in Cape Town so thought to duplicate our enjoyment a fortnight later in Morningside, Johannesburg. Beautiful piece of meat, 300gm of rump, was placed before my hungry tummy - but when I cut a slice it was cold. Cold . Huh? No way to run a steakhouse. Sent it back to be warmed and was then okay, but naturally now a bit too done for me. My partner who drooled over their pork ribs in CT said Morningside’s were ‘dry, tasteless, juiceless, cardboard.’ Two stars she said. I agree.

Superb steak! Had an amazing peper crusted fillet. Perfectly cooked. Ice cold Darling Lager beer. Nice Bar One complimentary hot drink to end the meal.Will be back.Ps Nomsa was our waitress and really fantastic.

Consistently good quality meat selection but somehow lacking a great food experience. I had a 300g rump with veggies and a Madagascan sauce and my wife had a regular burger and chips. It all came as ordered but to me it was a bit clinical. No frills, nothing special and something is missing. It was a quiet Christmas Eve lunch so perhaps that was it but I don’t think so. If you want good quality and reliable meat dishes it’s pretty good.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better prepared and tasting piece of meat! On this occasion, sirloin, ostrich, fillet on bone, and springbuck. I ate the buck, but sampled all :) Would easily give all cuts top marks for taste and prep. I’d give the sirloin a little extra star as I thought it was especially well prepared. I’d also highlight the Skilpadje starter - calves liver like you’ve never tasted. Excellent service and attentiveness. Desserts ok as well - not as amazing as the meat, but you’re not visiting a steakhouse for dessert, surely? The only odd thing were the complimentary chocolate vodkas served after the meal. Nice gesture, but probably not what I’d choose to round off an awesome meal.

Perfect dinner. Service is very attentive and food is great. Prices are okay for European standards. Definitely worth of visiting

Great restaurant and part of a small chain. Prides it’s self on a full BYO policy with no corkage ever charged. Lunch specials include two courses for R130, steak, burger, chicken options. Very efficient and polite service, also great quality steaks! Highly recommended.

I had a perfect Madagascar fillet with veggies. We also had the sirloin 300g - perfect, and the only downside was the burger was not quite cooked as we ordered it. I can highly recommend the steaks as they were just perfect.
