Spice Restaurant & Bar Lounge in Morningside, Durban is a fusion restaurant with an imaginative menu.  It offers the diner a wonderful selection of dishes that are both traditional and contemporary.  The beautifully converted old house offers a modern and clean interior that is warm and welcoming while being relaxed and interesting.  There is a bar area inside as well as a separate private dining area upstairs which can be reserved for special occasions and the walls are decorated with student art, which is often sold during lunch or dinner.  The canopied verandah/terrace area outside is perfect for lunches and warm evenings and there is a comfortable lounge area to relax in before or after dinner.

Having arrived at Spice restaurant on a wet and stormy night we were seated at a table for two and offered a glass each of Full Cream Sherry.  Soon afterwards a rosemary foccacia arrived and we were told about the Specials (which change daily) and the delightful Spice Light Lunches and tantalising salads for example Bali Spiced Chicken and Roasted Beetroot Salad or Asparagus and Gorgonzola Salad with Cinnamon Pears.

She said – I really enjoy prawns and avocado so I naturally selected Baked Avocado and Cumin Spiced Prawns for my starter.  The large, ripe avocado was sliced and fanned across the plate and covered with large, warm, spicy prawns, cheese with a cumin flavour and a green leaf salad at the base.  The spicy prawns balanced perfectly with the avocado and the cumin flavoured cheese added that interesting fusion element.

He said – The Herbed Asparagus & Bacon wrapped in phyllo caught my attention and it was absolutely fantastic.  Prepared with sesame oil and rosemary infused, the asparagus and bacon had a warm balsamic dressing with a light layer of crumbled Roquefort cheese.

He said – I had no choice but to order the lamb which sounded extremely appetising.  Roasted Coriander & Rosemary Spiced Rack of Lamb was the menu description and the meat was tender enough to melt in the mouth and had the most wonderful aroma of rosemary and other herbs as well as  sweet spices.  It was served with minted pea potato and onion mash and was one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever tasted.

She said – My choice was Grilled Sirloin with Avocado & Roasted Peppers.  The sirloin was prepared medium, slivered and served on a warm salad.  There were roasted red and yellow peppers, avocado slices and small crumbly pieces of Roquefort cheese.  It was a rich and interesting dish once again combining interesting ingredients perfectly and resulting in a sensational flavour of meat, peppers, avocado and mature cheese.

He said – The dessert menu changes fairly regularly and I wanted something prepared in an unusual way so I ordered the Cinnamon Milk Tart with Roasted Pistachios.  What an exceptional dish with the Pistachio combination.  It was moist, creamy and velvety smooth and it was served warm, which made it light and delicate.

She said – Baked Camembert was my choice and I was not disappointed.  The half camembert was delicately baked so that it was just very slightly melted and covered with a layer of sweet fig preserves.  There was caramelised verjuice over the top and a cracker selection on the side with grapes, strawberries and Cape gooseberries served with the cheese, all cut up into beautiful segments.  This was a feast for the eyes and the taste buds.  Highly recommended.

Spice Restaurant & Bar is often frequented by celebrities and Russel and his partner and Chef, Linda have hosted both Bill Clinton and Bill Gates, on the same evening.  Both were gracious enough to sign autographs and allow some photographs to be taken.
