Rare Grill

We have had one of the best steaks of our lives last Saturday 2 Jan 2021 at Greg’s fantastic steakhouse. Everything was perfect, the service from Lwazi, Greg as host (we also had to reschedule a couple of times and asked for a table outside in view of Covid and Greg was very flexible in all of it) and most of all the succulent blackened Hollandse biefstuk!You cannot find a better steak in South Africa.

This could so easily been a 5 star. A couple of small issues though. The good - generally excellent food - good steak (the rump could be better trimmed and just a little tough) but very well cooked, excellent sauces (although a little small), good veg and great salad, nice fries and good overall ambience and service. The minuses - cold plates (just no good for a really well cooked medium-rare steak), cold onion rings, a little grit in the creamed spinach and cappuccinos that were excellent but only warm not hot. These things can be fixed simply and this becomes a 5-star excellent establishment every time. Pity we didn’t meet or see the owner as I would have taken him through the small issues and he deserves a better rating!! Oh and the complimentary chocolate vodka was much appreciated and delicious - particularly as we never take desserts but love a tiny sweet thing at the end!! Thanks and sure we will be back.

The restaurant is really good, service is excellent, starters top draw and you have not reached the speciality yet, the steak. Creative, well prepared high quality meat. The place is alive with energy and lots of laughs. Good parking, exceptional service

A small intimate restaurant that ticks all the boxes! Atmosphere, Service and food so good you want to weep!Since my first visit a couple of months ago I have become a regular. Please don’t tell anyone how great they are as I don’t want to have to book months in advance for my fix! Compliments to the owner, manageress and all the support staff!

I am a member of a dinner club that has been going for over 10 years. Some 150 restaurants visited. The objective is to experience new venues. One of our members chose Rare Grill for tonight's dinner. Well it was rare. My girlfriend and I walked out because of the rudest waitress I have experienced in over 40 years of dining out in South Africa. First and foremost a restaurant should offer hospitality. The food may be wonderful but if the service and ambiance are unwelcoming then the whole point of going out for a dining experience is lost. That is exactly what happened at Rare Grill. To be spoken to in a condescending and derogatory manner when simply asking for clarification as to the apparently unique steaks offered by this venue is really inexcusable. An evening with old friends ruined by a misguided selfish person who represents the very worst of a youthful impetuousness that does not understand the value of customers. I will be dining elsewhere!!

The steaks are great, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We’ve felt completely “at home” whenever we’ve been and the selection of wines and gins is great!

It was our second visit in the last few months and like the first time, the food and service was superb again. The waitress is an expert, friendly and efficient. She does not need to write down orders. The food was again outstanding. I had a 200gr beef fillet with chocolate/chilli sauce. I knew choc sauce and red meat is a superb match, so I had to try it. It was fantastic and the meat cooked to perfection the way I like it. The onion rings were delicious and the chips were 'home made', nice and crispy (I don't like that fluffy stuff). Definitely no complaints as well from my wife and our daughter. I guess it is very hard to top their fillets. So also a big thank you to the kitchen staff!!! Definitely a top rating for the food and service. The wine list is very limited especially if you ask per glass. Better to BYO. But there is a reason why I can only give a 'very good'. The music is just too loud. It is difficult to have a decent conversation. I had to ask twice and got a funny but also snide remark for it. May be the reason to look for options next time we are in the mood for a a great piece of meat, we'll see. But sentiments aside, if your expectations in top meat are high, this place is a must.

We finally got to dine here. Every time we called previously they were fully booked. We ordered the 500g Tbone and Nguni ribeye. Both steaks were cooked to perfection and incredibly tatsty. I thoroughly enjoyed the cripsy chips and creamed spinach which are complementary sides Cosy spot and attentive waitress. Will definitely be back.
