Allée Bleue Pinotage Sweet
In 1999, the Dauphin family, owners of the prestigious German furniture manufacturer Dauphin Human Design Group, purchased the magnificent wine estate Allée Bleue situated on the outskirts of Franschhoek.
The estate was founded in 1690 and covers an area of 150 hectares.
Having not produced a drop of wine for close on 100 years the Dauphin's resurrected the vineyards, which has paid off handsomely, as they are now producing excellent red and white wines which are gaining respect all over the world.
Allée Bleue, named after the old, blue eucalyptus trees which line the imposing entrance to the estate, has had extensive restoration work done on the old buildings as well as introducing the latest technology to their cellar.
Made with love and laughter
Allée Bleue's winemaker, Gerda Willers, enjoys the freedom to make naturally derived wines from her vineyards.
Gerda is happiest when creating her blends which she perfects after countless tastings and trying an endless variety of combinations.
"Every bottle of wine contains a piece of the winemakers heart — enjoy the love and laughter in mine," quips Gerda.
At a luncheon recently held at the Dauphin Showroom in Cape Town we tasted a selection of Gerda's wines with delicious food prepared by Allée Bleue Cafe Bistro's chef.
The menu was interesting, starting with freshwater crayfish and fried quail breast on avocado coulis matched perfectly with their delicious 2008 white blend of Semillon and Chardonnay — The Isabeau.
The main course was an intriguing saddle of veal served with potato and celery mouse on pesto sauce and the wine was their flagship red, the L’Amour Toujourd 2006 —a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Grenache.
A full-bodied wine with exceptional balance of intense dark berry fruit and gentle tannins the wine paid a tribute to the dish.
But the best was left to last — a decadent and mouth-watering dessert of cherries in Pinotage natural sweet wine with chocolate sorbet. And to drink with it was the 2008 Allée Bleue Pinotage natural sweet wine.
This natural sweet has spicy, rich caramel, plum and strawberry aromas.
The velvety palate imparts silky flavours of black cherries, hazelnuts with a lingering warm spice finish.
Besides enjoying the wine with dessert it is a perfect partner for cheese and with an alcohol of 12.5 percent you can have more than one glass.
Expect to pay: R120 (375ml)
