After living and working in Durban restaurants for years, Marcelle, Sean and Guy have met some really interesting people who are devoted to supplying unity with really good ingredients. When we opened Unity it was decided that this was the route to go. Simple, flavourful and local.  

At Unity our philosophy is quality, sustainability and taste.  Our meat comes from sustainable sources in the KZN area often straight from the farm.   They are not always free range but no growth hormones or antibiotics have been used on our animal products where possible.  

A recent addition to this is our own hand-crafted COWBELL Pilsner.  Sean, Guy and Mo Therese blended our own brew under the guidance of Stewart at Robson’s brewery in Shongweni and it is available on tap at Unity. We have local brews being made in Durban and served on tap in Unity. In December 2011 the Cowbell Pilsner will be going into bottle and will be available to take home and buy from your local deli bottle stores.  

 

Sean is passionate about serving good quality local brand liquors, and many of our hose brands are all from South African producers and distilleries, with some really good local brandy, gin, vodka, tequila, and grappa.

In line with keeping flavours local, Durban curries are featured in a big way on our menu, served with rice/roti or as bunnies, it is a dish true to a Durbanite’s heart and we take great pride in mixing our own spices to create a unique flavour.  By doing this we are hoping to build a brand on true local flavour thereby decreasing our carbon footprint and proving to our clientèle that we care about what they are consuming.

 

The starters are so varied I find a platter would be the only way to satisfy my appetite! Followed by grass-reared, hormone-free Pork Loin Chops served on a mustard whipped mash, lathered with onion and cider gravy, and the cherry on top an apple chutney. Dessert is not generally my thing, however our authentic Crème Brûlée is the perfect finish to a meal.  

As for the décor we decided that modern-chic was the way to go, and our friends at TruCote on Windermere road led us in the right direction to create a stylish up-market venue without going over the top. Ambience is ordinarily loud and proud except at lunchtime when we strike a lighter, jazzier side!  

Not that’s we ask them to but a lot of our clients walk to Unity as it is based in a largely flatted area where high density living is present. This is both a green and safe to approach to going out to drink a few local beers, enjoy a meal and not drive home. Now, there’s a thing.

Directions


Driving on the N3, take the turnoff onto Felix Dlamini Road (M10) towards the Durban University of Techonology - Brickfield Campus. Turn right into Berriedale Road and right again into Peter Mokaba Ridge at the t-junction. Immediately on your left will be Silverton Road, you will find the Silvervause Centre on the corner of Vause Road and Silverton Road.
