The Striped Horse Bar & Grill opens its doors in Muizenberg
Striped Horse craft beer and Jurie Blomerus, formerly of Stanley’s Beer Yard
in Joburg, have combined their sense of adventure and entrepreneurship in a
partnership that embodies the spirit of yesteryear, quirk and generosity of
York Road in Muizenberg.
The Striped Horse Bar & Grill is place to enjoy a cold beer and coastal
hospitality in a space that encourages you to overstay your welcome. Situated
in buzzing York Road and looking over the sparkling Indian Ocean, this
inviting space is one part saloon bar, one part gypsy lounge and all parts cool.
The bar's interiors are what Jurie describes as “gypsy-meets-pirate-shanty”, a
mixture of floral bordello couches, benches, found objects and kitsch
paraphernalia with a hint of global traveller and a lot of nautical influence. A
light-up Madonna overlooks proceedings and back wall is plastered in a
striking geometric print.
“A lot of people want to escape the bustle of the CBD,“ Jurie says. “The
Striped Horse Muizenberg is a movement not only out of the city, but also to a
different state of mind. There's the idea that here anything is possible – and
that's the mentality that's at the heart of The Striped Horse Bar & Grill.”
This authenticity runs through everything The Striped Horse Muizenberg.
There are deep leather couches for lounging and a piano in the corner.
Tuesday nights are Gutbucket open-to-all jam sessions, while Fridays are
dedicated to Vinyl. The food is simple but hearty– Prego rolls, chicken wings,
grilled lamb chops and stringy chips. The tequila comes all the way from
Mexico and the cold craft beer on tap is local and lekker.
Pride of place is the affiliated Striped Horse brew – the full range of lager, pale
ale and pilsner is available on tap, as is further locally brewed craft CBC
beers. Plus Belgium’s Liefmans and St Francis’ Beach Blonde light. Artisanal
gins like Inverroche and other bespoke spirits line the top shelf.
