The Highlander restaurant is an institution in the tiny Free State town of Clarens. Known for being unpretentious and extremely family-friendly, the promise of hearty food and a welcoming environment never goes unfulfilled. The Friday evening happy hour is the cherry on top.
The Highlander is located in the heart of town at the Tourist and Information Centre. Like the restaurant itself, its premises are unassuming, but then again people don’t go there for its flashiness. Inside you’ll find white walls and exposed rafters, with tables and chairs arranged around the central fireplace. In winter, when the fire is glowing the place is exceptionally homely.
The atmosphere and menu are what make the Highlander. It is inevitably scattered with families – the kiddies menu ensures this is the case – with its selection of pizza, burgers and sandwiches. The adult menu is just as simple, but the food always hits the spot.
The Highlander’s wood fired pizzas are particularly renowned but the other sections of the menu – salads, soups, light meals, sandwiches, easy eating, signature dishes and dessert are all worth exploring. Depending on what you’re in the mood for, you can sample the sweet or savoury pancakes, grilled rainbow trout, Free State oxtail cooked in red wine, homemade duck and black cherry pie as well as wholesome desserts like banana split and homemade apple tartlets.
Head southwest on the R712 and when you reach Clarens, turn left onto Main Street. After 500m, turn left onto Van Zyl Street and then turn right onto Market Straat Oos. At the end of the road, turn left into Market Street and the restaurant will be on the right.
