Situated in the very heart of Linden, Johannesburg, this iconic bakery has been part of the community for the past 12 years. It was bought by Pierre van Renen in 2009 and under his ownership it has become the “home of the croissant” for not only the locals, but visitors from other suburbs as well.
The bakery opens daily (including public holidays) at 06h30, which is a boon for the early morning coffee addicts who need to get their fix on the way to work. And, of course, a croissant (or two) to accompany that coffee. Customers have a choice of chocolate, plain, cheese, and almond. The latter being a particular favourite amongst the regulars. Hot breakfasts are available as are healthy options like fruit bowls as well as muesli and yoghurt.
What draws customers to the Argentinean? In a word it is the ambiance.
The Argentinean offers unlimited free wi-fi connectivity, which is why many regulars that have turned this corner bakery into their “office”. Meetings are conducted here, deals are done and world affairs are discussed, argued and sometimes even solved. The venue lacks pretentiousness and “what you see is what you get” gives the Argentinean an edge over some of the other coffee shops in the suburb. When asked why they frequent the Argentinean, the regulars will say that they feel welcome and part of the “family”.
As the main business is the bakery, these goods are prepared fresh every morning. The croissants, cakes, and oatmeal cookies are all baked on the premises. As far as the favourite hot meals are concerned, the HUGE full English breakfasts followed by the chicken livers as well as the pastas that are served at lunch score highest with the diners.
The Argentinean can be found on the corner of 7th Street and 4th Ave, Linden
