It is fair to say that East London is not known for its culinary prowess, but as is often the case, there are a few surprise eateries which will have you returning again and again. Sanook is just such a place, small and simple with a solid menu. Those looking for good food at an unpretentious venue will be happy to find this place.
Sanook is primarily a café and burger joint. This means that the menu is not particularly extensive but the food that they do offer is delicious. For vegetarians and health fiends, or just those with a smaller appetite, there is an array of salads, such as ‘Going Green’ with ingredients like peppery greens, avo and parmesan shavings, or the ‘Asian Invasion’ with seared beef fillet, baby marrow and cabbage.
Panini options abound too, as do burgers, with options like the ‘Rockstar’ with feta, bacon, avocado and red onion, demanding your attention. There are also delicious crispy pizzas, snack boards and numerous side-dishes to choose from.
All of these food options are made especially enjoyable in the pleasant, low key restaurant, which has a minimalist atmosphere with white walls interspersed with bright green paintings. There are light wooden tables with white chairs and a very cosy outdoor area which is shaded, and as zen-like as the interior.
From East London Airport, travel on Settlers Way (R72) towards Berea. Continue for 8kms and at the circle, take the 1st exit onto Oxford Street. After 2.7kms, turn right onto Lukin Road and then continue onto Pearce Street. Turn left onto Chamberlain Road and the destination will be on the right.
