Beijing Chinese Restaurant is a large eatery within the Lakefield Shopping Mall in Benoni. Walking through the doors there can be no mistaking that this is an Asian-themed place. Between the colour scheme and the various décor items on display, and of course, the restaurant’s name, it is glaringly obvious that the theme is Chinese.
Having said that though, you may or may not be surprised to discover that the main menu item is sushi – a food native to Japan, and not China. However, it is Asian none-the-less and the sushi options are appealing. Choose between rainbow rolls, sashimi, hand rolls, California rolls, nigiri, maki rolls and more, with fillings such as salmon, crab, vegetables, prawn and tuna. Basically all the standard sushi options as well as some house-specialties.
You can order either individual items or the extremely good value platters, such as the 34 piece combo platter.
The restaurant décor is very oriental, at least in the way that we in the WEST have come to understand oriental. Traditional-style lanterns hang from the ceiling while the chairs are covered in Chinese-inspired material. The table décor consists of thick orange cloth underneath a smaller checked table cloth. While the whole restaurant is indoors, there are two distinct sections, one being cosier, while the other is in a glass room with a high ceiling and glass windows from floor to ceiling, much like a conservatory.
