Tucked away in the leafy suburb of La Lucia you will find one of Durban’s culinary gems, Al Firenze. The interior is casual trattoria with a relaxing ambience making it a perfect choice for a meal with family and friends and even a business get together! Established in 1990, it is a favourite amongst locals with an outdoor terrace perfect for Durban’s climate.
Owner, Tony de Sousa has a very hands-on approach and when he is not up front greeting and making meal suggestions to clients, he will be found in the kitchen cooking up signature dishes. Tony personally sources all the local fresh produce before the shop opens because the key to all their dishes lies in the freshness and quality of their ingredients.
Sample the authentic tastes of Italy without leaving the country. The menu features favourites like thin based pizza, spinach tortellini in sage & real butter, but the seafood is the star of the show! Tender octopus - sliced and pan fried with garlic, herbs, lemon and a touch of chili, finished with white wine or Fresh mussels, flown in from the Cape this morning and steamed with nothing more than tomato, garlic, white wine and flat leaf parsley.
Lastly freshly caught linefish grilled to perfection with fresh herbs and served with fresh steamed vegetables…There’s also plenty of heart-warming fare for those wintry days, like rabbit casserole, wild boletus mushrooms cooked with garlic and parsley or slow cooked lamb shank. Al Firenze’s winning recipe is all about simplicity and freshness and they consistently deliver superb quality food.
Look out for the specials board which is updated daily depending on what produce was found that day - these dishes are usually the first to be sold out!
