“such a disappointing expensive meal”
So so so so disappointing!!! I didn't even finish my food as it felt like a waste of calories!!!!!! The dumplings had no flavor the Ramen was not good and the broth lacked any form of Umami!!!! The sushi was pretty average too.It is not a cheap place and there was nothing I ate that I would go back for.

“Loved our visit, food excellent”
Loved our visit, sad it was empty, but food more than made up for it. Food was delicious, the hostess Yasue Sato checked it, waitress was attentive, and the Green Tea, and Tempura I’ve Cream topped off a great evening.

“Wonderful authentic Japanese food hideaway”
As visitors to Johannesburg we asked locals for an authentic Japanese restaurant. And we were not disappointed. The sushi is very good and fresh. And the cooked food is absolutely outstanding - the Udon noodle broth is cooked over two days and has a wonderfully rich flavor. The chicken and also pork dumplings were homemade and world class. Topped off with great service and a nice drink selection. We had a lovely evening and would highly recommend.

“There is no better Japanese food anywhere”
I cannot say enough good things about Yamato. it is by far and away the best Japanese food I have had in SA and I eat out a lot. Try the line fish carpaccio and the gyoza for starters. Then ask Christine to prepare you a surprise platter. You will not be disappointed.

“Friday night dinner”
Had a lovely bento box for dinner. Service was good and the restaurant was clean. I enjoyed a hot cup of green tea as it was a bit chilly. The food was beautifully presented, prepared with the freshest ingredients. I really am looking forward to returning. Basement parking is a bit tight, I prefer parking in the Thrupps Centre.

“In need for Japanese food after safari”
Coming from safari in Botswana and Zambia, we were stopping over in J'burg before our flight back home. We were craving for Asian food and here especially Japanese. An online search for best Japanese places in town came up with Yamato. We were not disappointed. Go try it yourself !

“Tuesday lunch”
Ordered lunch from the suggested menu on Tuesday. Yamato currently is our Japanese restaurant of choice and we were once again not disappointed at all. Started with Miso soup of good quality and the freshly prepared food (Bento box and stir fry pork) was mouth watering. Have been here several times before and will keep on returning.

“Excellent true Japanese, welcoming owner and staff”
I reviewed this restaurant in 2014 when we were pretty disappointed with the décor of the new venue, the inexperienced staff and how it affected our dining experience. We have to own up that we have kept coming back very regularly since. When you want a clean, fresh kilojoule counting meal - Japanese is the best. Planning for our visit today by revisiting the menu I noticed the many negative comments in recent reviews and feel these need to be addressed. Yes, it is pricey - but so is Japanese food anywhere in the world. You pay for the quality of the ingredients. Our welcome today was pretty much the best you could expect from a Johannesburg restaurant, the owner was evident and checked in with us a few times during the meal. The food was excellent, after an amuse-bouche of marinated cooked tuna, a bowl of Oshinko (mixed J pickles) with Suno Mono (a seafood salad with the most delicious dressing) followed by deluxe Sashimi (my favourite is the calamari which is wonderfully gelatinous) and vegetable tempura. A glass of the house white wine is great to start off (and we don't do house wine, generally) and was followed by a generous cold sake in the box. The waiting staff will remember you and your preferences - so, if you can afford the special food, this is a place you have to visit
