The Warehouse @ Protea Hotel O.R Tambo

Food was quite good. They handled special dietary requirements very well. Buffet has lots of choices for a resonable price. Oscar and Sipho were most accomdating/ Also the chefs were extremely helpful/ Food was well prepared with hot food hot.

Went to to the restaurant for wine and got there at the lobby next to the bar l waited about 10 minutes for service until l asked for the wine list from the waiter that was passing by and he never came back so l went to the bar and ordered a glass of wine,the barman told me he was busy finishing a order,he will bring it to me and l told l have been waiting for service can l please have it and he told me he is busy with some orders,so l went back to my seat only to be served after 10 minutes again,l saw some people come and served,l mean really now this is what am paying for?

Staying at the hotel and popped in for supper. The welcome, service and food is awesome. Can't wait to try their breakfast.

We grabbed a late dinner at the Warehouse after a very long international flight that forced an overnight stay at the Protea Hotel. They offer a buffet choice but you can also order off the menu which we did. We sampled the chicken curry stir fry as well as the spaghetti and meatballs which were quite tasty and assuaged our appetites. Service was attentive enough.

Appalling food but you are slightly trapped as its the only restaurant in the hotel. The service was ok but other than that i would avoid.

The restaurate decor is of an airplane warehouse and very different from the norm. The evening being cold there was two huge gas heaters which provided warmth and gave of a romatntic atmosphere. The service is very freandly and fast and the food divine. I had the Billtong Fillet rare with backed potato and it was served to perfection. My partner had the Mediterranean pasta and the ingredients were all fresh and delicious. We ended off with a thick Chocolate mousse that was devine and the best part of it all the Warehouse restaurant food is very reasonably priced...

We checked into the hotel late and hence only went to the restaurant even later. We ordered sirloin steaks on the advise of one of our colleagues who said it was so good. Our meal arrived. It was well presented but the sirloin steaks were so tough we had to send them back. The chef apologised profusely and then said they had now run out of sirloin and offered rump steaks. We had waited so long for the meal that we just ate the veggies. This restaurant is exceptionally busy with the hotel being fully booked and I am not sure that there is adequate staffing capacity to meet the demand and maintain high standards. The drinks served were satisfactory except for the wine which seemed very little. It was served in a small wine glass that was not even half full. Left feeling like that was certainly not the best meal we had enjoyed.

The hotel is handy for the airport and is frequented by certain airlines and aircrew. We had dinner here last night with friends. The decor is aviation orientated which for the enthusiast is interesting. After drinks in the bar, we were shown to a long table for 12persons but after noticing that there were only 4 of us, we're shown to a more appropriate table especially as there were not many other diners. We ordered 3 steaks and a stir fry. When the food arrived, it was well presented, however, all the steaks were improperly cooked. The stir fry was far to salty and obviously disagreed with me as I am still suffering the next day. Although the food was acceptable, I would not recommend this for the fine diner, more for the bar meal person. That said, I suppose that there are catering for the occasional overnight stayer and not for the regular diner. A little overpriced for what it is catering for.

We had springbok carpaccio as well as calimari with a vanilla sauce for starters (two separate starters), and for mains a salmon penne and a macaroni "cake" with bacon. The salmon penne was good, but the sauce overpowered the salmon, and there was not quite enough salmon. It was also oversalted. As a result, the pasta and salmon tasted almost identical ... not good. The macaroni cake consisted of two slices of macaroni pie, with thick strips of lean, somewhat sweet bacon on top. The bacon was not super salty, but the macaroni was. The pannacotta/berry dessert was excellent.

The Warehouse is the in-house restaurant at the Protea Hotel Or Tambo. They have very cool aircraft-styled décor and the result is a nice atmosphere. Windows along one side overlook the hotel grounds, with planes visible in the sky as they take off and land at the airport. I got room service for dinner, which is the same food that they serve in The Warehouse, and it was excellent – a lovely Chicken Linguine that was both very tasty and quite reasonably priced. The breakfast I had the following morning was also very tasty, with a huge range of hot and cold foods available. Overall the quality of the food was excellent. What was strange was that the breakfast was very expensive, almost twice the price of my dinner. It was also excessive – the spread was excellent, but it was clearly a way for the hotel to trap unsuspecting visitors. My recommendation would be to take the free shuttle to the airport and eat there – even with standard airport overcharging you will find a cheaper meal of a similar standard. So that was my little gripe over. I was happy with the restaurant and the food was excellent – just watch the bill, and if the buffet breakfast seems too good to be true, that is because it is. Otherwise I would rate the restaurant an excellent 5-stars, but their greed costs them a few points.
