Kunjani Wines - Restaurant and Accommodation

Set amidst rolling vineyards, the Kunjani Wines Restaurant is located on the upper level with a deck that has a view for miles. The modern African decor and the dark African style bar compliment the Al Fresco dining that has individual tables inside and long, 10 seater tables on the deck for larger parties. There are also comfortable lounge suites on which to relax and sample the excellent wines on offer.

We arrived on a Sunday lunch time and the restaurant was busy, but relaxed. The menu has wine recommendations against each dish so we decided to order our food first so that we had the recommended wines for our dishes. First, complimentary homemade bread rolls were served with a mustard cream sauce and a beetroot preserve.

For starters I selected the Roasted Duck Breast which was lightly cooked in a Rooibos reduction. It was very tender and was accompanied by grilled asparagus, strawberries, crunchy pickled red and yellow onions, green leaves and herbs. The recommended wine was the Kunjani Stolen Chicken Rosé 2017. My partner opted for the Camembert Cheese with Fig Compote. This comprised of light tempura crumbed Camembert blocks on toasted French loaf wedges with delightful fig compote, laced with vinegar, and paired with baby leaf salad. The recommended wine was the excellent Kunjani Chenin Blanc.

For main course I did not choose from the excellent menu but rather went with the day’s special – a 300gr Ribeye Steak with creamy mushroom sauce and thick, chunky & spicy chips. It was a difficult decision as the other special of the day was Lamb Shank which had been slow cooked for 6 hours. My partner had the Linefish, a lightly grilled portion of Sea Bass. This had a firm texture and a slightly crispy exterior, served on a bed of beetroot quinoa. It was accompanied by a light cheese sauce at the base and which was complimented by a tangy tomato swirl and served with roasted baby beets, baby tomatoes & broccoli. The Rib Eye was accompanied by a glass of Kunjani Blend 2015, a Gold Winner comprising Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. The recommendation for the Sea Bass was the same as for the Camembert starter, the excellent Kunjani Sauvignon Blanc.

Despite very generous portion sizes we managed desserts. The Eton Mess is a Passion fruit meringue with fruit mousse, ginger crumble and berry compote and is served with a scoop of sorbet. My partner opted for the Trio of Artisanal Sorbet. These sorbets are unusually infused with Kunjani wines and include Lime & Chenin Blanc / Summer berry Shiraz / Pineapple.

All the dishes were beautifully presented. Whilst clearly a fine dining restaurant, the chef prefers the label – Fun Dining. Service from our waiter was friendly and professional and with the beautiful views and excellent wines was the perfect, lazy way to spend our Sunday.
