“Disappointing”
Service not good with requests regarding menu choices being completely wrong upon service as well as certain items excluded on the plate that were seen on menu.

“Staff leaves much to be desired”
My friends and I wanted to order a late lunch at glendas. When we arrived no one was there to seat us, take our temperatures or write down our information. We did all that ourselves. Staff were unfriendly and disinterested. We then decided to move outside and moved around until we found a good table. My friend, who is fluent in Zulu, heard the waiter gossiping about us and complaining. We were so uncomfortable we had our drinks and left. A pity.

“Unique but requires facelift”
After almost 25 years of on and off dining at Glenda’s, we decided to drop in on a public holiday after phoning ahead to ensure that the restaurant was indeed open. The venue offers inside and outside (perimeter) dining in an environment that was once unique and perhaps somewhat quirky. The original artwork and copious numbers of fresh flowers are still there but items of furniture and equipment are very tired and need a serious update / at least some repair. Even a paint job and clean up would go a long way.Although small in quantity, the food was good. That aside, the interaction that ruined the experience, was the advice given to us on arrival and a full 1.5 hours before public-holiday-closing time, was that the kitchen was already closed when we arrived. We queried that as we had just phoned, and the staff member called for the manager. After debate, he then said that he would do us a favour and re-open the kitchen as the staff were keen to go home notwithstanding the time. He also acknowledged that in general he found it difficult to get the staff to do any work. Maybe that is the reason that the place is looking a bit dirty and run down. It certainly is a long way form it’s beginnings at Hyde Park Corner. Despite the number of staff, the manager did all the ordering and fetching and carrying of the food. Would be go back? Maybe. But certainly not when the rather large contingent of staff walk around with long lips and not doing particularly much due to wanting to go home, or if the venue further deteriorates. Time for a serious clean up.

“Delicious lunch”
Delicious lunch was had the other day on a whim after seeing pictures of friends Christmas lunch at this special place. We had the chicken pie, broccoli and anchovy starter, calamari and fries. Every dish was delicious. In addition the ice tea and fruit and vegetables juices were very tasty. Always keep space for cake as that was a fantastic offering too.Service was kind and professional. I love the eclectic decor and the relaxed sense of the place - all about the product and its creation

“Lunch”
The service and ambiance at the restaurant is remarkable. Please take time to visit it. It’s overlooking the busy Jan Smuts street yet so surreal

“Great breakfast, disappointing cakes”
We had a beautifully presented scrambled egg, avocado and toast breakfast. The eggs were creamy, well-seasoned and delicious! The service was great, and the ambience was amazing. We ordered the carrot and chocolate cakes and I did not enjoy either – they were dry. Their menu items are well-priced and I would definitely return for their breakfast.

“Delicious meals”
We were a group of friends entertaining one friend who lives in the USA for a late lunch. The decor in this restaurant is easy but very beautiful, you could call it relaxed fine dining. The food was amazingly tasty and delicious AND they have very generous helpings. The meatballs-spaghetti dish was the best I have ever tasted. Service was great and the owner is visible and engaged with guests.I highly recommend this restaurant. Please book to avoid disappointment

“Unusual breakfast choices plus pastries”
An interesting menu with many choices of food. The avo toast with poached eggs is an excellent choice. The lemony eggs with rocket is a different dish with cooked greens plus toast. It was well flavored and an interesting combination of flavors. It has been my experience that even when requesting very soft poached eggs, the restaurants serve medium to hard eggs. Not only at this restaurant but pretty much all breakfast places.

“Innovative, refreshing and unusual”
We arrived here entirely at random while driving past one winter's Saturday afternoon feeling like nothing in particular but a pleasant spot to chat in and a drink or a coffee. We were immediately impressed with the funky but sophisticated decor and relaxing, obviously carefully selected music (well done!!) and very friendly staff. Intending just to glance at the menu, when it came we were immediately tempted by the unusual and innovative combinations. I had just returned from Seville and was hankering after tapas (small portions of interesting food usually shared among friends with wine or beer over a few hours), and lo and behold here was exactly what I was looking for.We ordered the white anvhovy, broccoli and caramelized onion salad and the monkfish with a date and corriander chutney, served with half a grilled banana. I ordered a pleasant savignon blanc, noticing some of my favourites on the small but obviously carefully chosen winelist, very reasonably priced. Both dishes were excellent beyond what we imagined: quite small but not unreasonable portions packed with unusual flavours and textures. The chef had obviously thought long and hard, and succeeded brilliantly. The prices are very reasonable. It's not about the size of the portions (when will South Africans realise this?!) - it's about quality and originality. We paid R300 with a tip, all in. I would happily pay double for the obvious love and care which this place obviously shows in everything it does.Having for many years become tired of the generally mediocre restaurant scene in Joburg, I am really happy to see places like this (similar in type and ambience to Cafe Dolci, another excellent choice) flourishing. There was also a very diverse clientele on the day we were there which added to the pleasure. Sexy, stylish but unpretentious.Congratulations, Glenda, on a really superb restaurant! Long may it continue.
