“Very disappointing”
I gave this restaurant a five-star review a couple of years ago. How the mighty have fallen. Once a superb Peruvian restaurant, Charango is now a poignant symbol of the decline and dumbing-down of Cape Town's food scene. I was returning because I remembered the tuna dishes and pisco cocktails very fondly. But they had run out of tuna, our waiter explained, and hadn't had pisco for three months (they'd lost touch with their supplier). Despair. But at least I could have the ceviche, which I ordered. 'Just to let you know...', the waiter said, wringing her hands, 'we get a lot of complaints about the ceviche; we're about to take it off the menu.' Their version of ceviche, I discovered, was not ceviche at all, but salmon carpaccio (made with tasteless salmon). 'We aren't really a Peruvian restaurant anymore', the waiter confessed, 'but a kind of... general South American restaurant. We mostly do steak.' The writing now on the wall, we finished our starters and decamped to somewhere we could have a tolerable meal. If you have fond memories of what this place once was, don't ruin them by coming back.
