Cattle Baron - Mossel Bay

Food was good, service friendly and reasonably fast. Reasonably priced and will visit again. No views but good ambiance.

What a bad experience!!! Been going there for years.....NEW OWNERS. PRICES GONE UP, PORTIONS GETS SMALLER.No more veg for the table ?!?!?WTF that's why we go there ! Quality gone also. Hair on the Eisbein and try cutting your steak with the cheap cutlery.... steak knives bend before cutting your meat! Come on guys ! Cattle Baron Bellville started it all and got it right....you f-ing it up big time. Never ever going back...ever !

Decided to give Cattle Baron a chance and was a little disappointed. The sirloin steak was good but arrived cold. Get the basics right for goodness sakes.

You visit the Cattle Baron for the meat dishes and not the views. But if that is what you like, then you will not be disappointed. Recent visitors complained that their meat cuts were overcooked. However, we were three at our table and we all agreed that the meat portions were perfectly prepared. Maybe a different or new chef? Still, a very enjoyable lunch. Good show Cattle Baron.

We visit Cattle Baron every year when I visit my parents, it's become a bit of a sentimental place for us. It always had a lovely warming atmosphere, play area for the kids, and for the smokers there was a "smoking bar".On our most recent visit tonight it was a very different place. I'll give that our waitress Monique was lovely and the steaks were delicious, it however will not be somewhere we rush back to quickly, or ever. The play area has now gone, making it fairly child unfriendly, this is a big thing when it's one of the main reasons you go there. The smoking area has also been done away with, leaving smokers to stand outside in the freezing weather with 1 ashtray between 4 tables. Not great for the older parental. There's not much atmosphere, and for a fairly large place, having only 3 waitresses/waitrons you seem to be sat all on top of each other. Although the steaks and kids ribs were lovely, silly shortcuts have been made like freezing the sour cream for the baked potatoes ( which are now 3 small new potatoes, I think boiled, instead of a lovely crispy baked potato) so when it defrosts it is half water half grainy white mulsh. The prices seem to have gone up but even more annoyingly there are items like certain craft beers still on the menu that they no longer serve as the draught machines were taken with in the sale (apparently a while ago so plenty time to have changed things) . All in all, if you're going to buy a restaurant and change everything that was good about it, or what it was known for, then rather change the name and start fresh to avoid dissapointmemt.

My boyfriend went to this restaurant about 4 years ago and really wanted to take me there because the service, quality and overall dining experience justified the price tag for a premium steak house. Based on this we decided to book a table and head there for dinner. However When we arrived, we got there a little bit early and although our table was ready they let us stay at the bar to have a drink before heading over to our table. When we got to the table they had given us a booth and even though the restaurant wasn't busy they still spread the tables out, which we did appreciate. We decided to have a starter each and wine by the glass, along with a steak each for our mains. The food was nothing to brag about. Our steaks were over cooked and a tip if you want a medium steak, for example, order it medium rare. The service wasn't terrible, it wasn't a busy night but the waiter could have been more attentive. We even had a waitress who was covering the section on the other side of the restaurant come over to check on us and bring some of our dishes out too us. We ordered some baked cheesecakes to take away. The cheesecake again were nothing special. Overall it wasn't bad dining experience but the price is defiantly not worth the quality, our bill come to just under 1000 rand and if your looking for an easy steak meal you might want to consider Spur instead, a lot cheaper and you know exactly what you are getting.

I visited this Cattle Baron 2 years ago and the service was poor that day to say the least but at least the food was fine. Today my father asked me to take him there since he was looking fo a good steak. I ordered a 400g rump medium rare. When I got my steak it was just under well done so I called the manager and he agreed that it was not at all medium rare and and closer to well done. So he said he will give me a "little discount" (his own words) so thank you so much for the 14% discount on an awful over cooked streak. I saw that as an insult. Keep your steak in the future...

Went for the Christmas buffet. Absolutely shocking and disappointing! They overbooked the place there's no AC, ambience or music. Food was average, they served canned beetroot. Won't eat here again

The family decided on Cattle Baron as it just looked like the right place for us to have dinner. The service from start to finish was on point and food was fantastic i specifically had the ribs and it was very very tasty. The seats are comfortable and one could sit there and just have a fun time. There is also a place for kids to play so that's for us a big bonus. I will definitely go eat there again.

We were only in town for a few days and discovered this great restaurant. It was what we were looking for a reasonably priced restaurant with a big menu. I would go back if we were still nearby but I’m afraid that’s not possible.
