Butcher Block Restaurant - Hillcrest

Always had good service & food & ambience, we've frequented this restaurant many times. Steak great, chips excellent, salad good, drinks tops. Service friendly & helpful.

My wife and I eat out very often. We decided to try Butchers Block in Hillcrest as we recently moved into the area. At first everything was fine and the prawn starters were good. I got very irritated by 4 gents sitting at the bar, having very loud conversations and actually shouting at each other. The manager was only interested in his cellphone for at least an hour and when he eventually came to see us, he said they were regulars and there was nothing he could do. They had been drinking at the bar since 4pm and 3 hours later, he only expected them to leave at 10pm. We ordered mains, my oxtail was so tough I couldn't get it off the bone. I insisted on paying for everything and just leaving as I really did not enjoy the dining experience. The waittress told the manager about the oxtail but he did not bother to come to our table to discuss it. My impression is that this Buthers Block is not nearly the standard you would expect. Noisy "regulars " can do what they want and food quality is not important because they make their money from the huge amounts of alcohol consumed by the noisy "regulars " at the bar. This is a bar that also serves food. Do you yourself a favour and stay away.

A family of 3, looking for a hearty lunch. Ordered the Chicken & Prawn Curry, Bacon & Camembert Sirlion & Eisbein. Disappointment is all we can say. The meals took longer and it appeared 2 other tables who arrived after us were served their food first. Eisbein was overly salty and not crisp, Curry seemed to lack the advertised coconut cream base and was hardly a curry, Sirloin was so sinewy my son struggled to eat it. At those prices, we expected better. Certainly not a cut above. Will not be back in a hurry.

Was surprised how quiet it was for a Saturday night. Service was friendly and efficient which is what I would except. Friends enjoyed their steaks including the Tomahawk, the largest steak on the bone. My fillet was good but have had better mushroom sauces. In comparison to my regular steakhouses thought it was more expensive.

My husband and I ordered a Surf and Turf and a BBC Rump Steak. We were very disappointed, the steaks were flavourless and very tough. My steak was full of sinew, the steak knives were also very blunt so trying to cut the tough sinewy steak was quite a task. Upon chatting to the manager about it, he said Rump is unfortunately the toughest of the steaks. We ordered medium/rare so this was not an overcooked steak.Unfortunately we won't be returning as at R195 a steak you expect it to be good. Butcher Block States - "With a strong desire to provide quality steaks to the people of South Africa, and the realisation that there were no good Steakhouses in Durban" After this statement I expected to get the best steak in Durban. I must say though the waitress was amazing and the starters were very good - Deep Fried Mozzarella and Garlic Snails.

This is a great place to go on Wednesday night's with their boys night specials which are great value for money.

Visiting from England and delighted to be taken to their favourite local steakhouse. Absolutely superb steak and sides. Lovely wine list to choose from and the service was excellent. I hope we get time to return before we go home! Thoroughly recommend.

The food was great, the service was also great, the location is perfect, will definitely be going there on my next visit in Hillcrest

Family lunch on a Saturday with the Butcher Block specials was excellent value & very good sized portions ! Many choices on special ! Good wine included !

When you advertise a Carvery together with pictures of succulent roast meat being carved, that's what you expect to be servedInstead you get a makeshift serving station set up with nondescript and mostly unidentifiable pieces of meat . What was termed roast beef can best be described as dry tough pieces of organic matter. Roast chicken was individual square pieces all looking identical and certainly not carvedVegetables consisted of very good roast potatoes, rice and butternut ....some greens would have made a differenceThe curry ran out before we could taste (13:30)The tripe was not cleaned properly I would suggest a visit to a few other local restaurants offering a similar service (and price) and see what a real carvery really isTo add to the overall lack of attention to detail the toilets were in a poor state of cleanliness
