Bihari - Newlands

Good Indian food . Excellent service. Clean . Free WiFi . Open at 12:30pm . Family friendly. They have high chairs for babies. Easily accessible.

Conveniently positioned on the main road this Indian offers a wide ranging menu and it is not easy to make a choice. We opted for a simple meal of samosas, naan and a chicken and a fish curry.The food was very pleasant with nice flavours and we did not have room for desserts.The wine list is nothing special and not that wide a range of beers either.It was a very busy time so the place was quite noisy and service intermittent and not that interactive and there is a strong emphasis on takeaways.We will return though on our next visit to Newlands..

We were so disappointed in Bihari. What a joke! We waited nearly an hour for our starter! Chicken tikka was nice, We then waited more than ahour for our main course. Restuarant was not that busy but the chefs were churning out large amounts of takeaway plastic bags in full view of the restaurant. So frustrating! Staff not interested in the customers who have made an effort to visit the restuarant. We cannot recommend Bihari to our friends and family as it was quite embarrassing to sit and wait for our food.

We went to the curry house on more than one occasion whilst watching the test match between England and South Africa. There was a group of about 10 of us that ordered food and unfortunately they didn't manage to get the order right first time. We asked for mix meat platter starters and got vegetable starters instead. I understand that people make mistakes but that that was a pretty crucial part to our order. The meat is chargrilled and very tasty, and for mains I had a lamb Madras which was also very nice. I cannot not fault the food too much but the service could of been better.

Very good Indian restaurant in Newlands. Wide choice of dishes, friendly, efficient service. Mixture of visitors and regulars amongst the diners.

Had a really nice meal. We started with the mixed samosas which were great and then had a chicken and sag curry and some tandoori king prawn with nan bread. All the food was very flavorful and the medium curries were just the right level of spice. Place was let down by service and lack of attention to detail.the waiter was really nice but the samosas were delivered without any dates, cutlery or napkins. On the mains we were given no new napkins and waiter never came back to check if we needed more drinks. The table next to us also had to wait an hour for there main course. Would go again as food was great but expect to have to 'manage' the waiters.

This restaurant is always an excellent choice to eat out. There speciality for me is still their Tandoor chickens that is a must. The fish curry is also good. Plus their prawn mashallah is excellent. The Garlic nans are very good. Service, needs a bit of attention. 4/5

Best dishes: chicken tandoori, regular naan, papad starters with sauces, plain yogurt, dal makhani , chicken tikka masala and butter chicken, garlic naan and butter naan.Wait staff was great. Norbert and Akki were very helpful. Hostess at the front could be friendlier and a little more courteous.We stayed at Southern Sun for nine nights and Bihari was very convenient.

When the Bihari opened in 2009 in Newlands it was a welcome addition as there was a dearth of Indian restaurants in the area. Now however although the food is generally good, the cost, service and value for money are far less so. IE a dinner for 5 the food (Small portions) came out at 80% more expensive in a direct price comparison with an excellent establishment elsewhere, albeit in a less "Posh" area. Whilst the food is far from bad, the Butter chicken lacked depth of flavour, the Lamb Vindaloo was devoid of any hint of vinegar - essential for this style of dish - the Lamb Masala and Prawn Masala were good, Papadums plentiful and Naan breads fine. Three tiny dishes of cucumber/ tomato, Mint yoghurt & Mango chutney would have sufficed for two but not five people. The restaurant itself is very noisy restricting conversation. Recommend 'back to the drawing board'.

Our waiter, Trust, was very friendly and could answer all our questions, until it came to dessert. Having not eaten Indian desserts before, I enquired about the kulfi and the falooda. I didn't want a dessert that was too sweet, and was told both were very sweet. The waiter finally admitted he hadn't tried it himself! I wish the waiter had rather been truthful from the beginning, or offered to find out more, but he was redeemed by his sweet nature. I decided to order the kulfi. What a disappointment. Placed in a warm bowl, the kulfi was half the size of a cupcake, had ice crystals, and no effort whatsoever had been made to make it look good. At R50, it was overpriced. The flavour was okay, and it definitely was not very sweet.The butter and garlic naan were really good, and our mains - the lamb chops, the lamb in spinach sauce, and the chicken tikka masala, were all good.The floor in the Ladies restroom was also very sticky - not nice.
