Zur Holzbucht is a delightful German establishment located just off Hout Bay’s Main Road, behind the Caltex Garage. Experienced restaurateurs and old friends Olie and Stefan decided to bring authentic and affordable German Fair to Hout Bay and chose this location because it offers a stunning outdoor area much like a traditional German beer garden. In fact the outside area with loads of comfortable outside seating and glorious mountain views, not to mention the fantastic kiddies play area, truly sets this restaurant apart. I don’t think there’s anything else like it anywhere in Cape Town. Not only is it suitable for meeting friends and family but it’s also ideal for a celebration or event.

The name Zur Holzbucht actually means Hout Bay if translated directly. The interior is casual, warm and welcoming with lots of wood and of course a traditional pub area in the middle with seating all around it. It’s a lovely spot to come to at any time of the day and the barman is always cheerful and fun. When I was there one gentleman had come along with his dog. Dogs are always welcome and there’s even a water bowl to ensure that they can enjoy their favorite tipple while their master sips his frothy German beer.

Being a German establishment it’s decorated like a sports bar with lots of colorful flags and bench seats throughout. There is a huge TV screen where patrons were able to enjoy the World Cup in style. Not only are sports events screened there but patrons can view all the German Football games live (Bundesliga/Sportschau).

In terms of German Food which essentially makes up the menu it’s all freshly made on the premises daily by the hands-on owners and chefs. Popular dishes are the Pork Knuckle with Potato Dumpling and Sauerkraut, The Smoked Kassler Roast with Pan-fried Potatoes/Sauerkraut or The Shredded Pork Smoky with Sauerkraut in a Hot Dog Roll. If you’re keen on desserts everything here is delicious, fresh and 100% home-made. It’s very difficult to choose between the delectable Apple Strudel, the Baked Cheesecake or the delicious Bee Sting Cake. The portions are large and it’s okay to share in order to sample everything.

Children and families are welcome at this friendly restaurant and if you want something fun to attend there’s a Kids Drum Workshop at Zur Holzbucht every Friday from 3pm. All kids aged 3-12 are welcome and the cost is R100.

If you are planning a special occasion pop in and chat to Olie about what you need. He will make sure you end up with a memorable and fun occasion.
