This romantic, cosy family-run bistro, tucked away in Plettenberg Bay, in the heart of the Garden Route, is a favourite haunt of both locals and visitors alike. Throughout the languid summer months, when Plett hums with holiday-makers on the look-out for sun and sea, you are well-advised to book well ahead to ensure your table. The Med has been operating for more than two decades, and is maturing richly. The ambience is warm & convivial, a charming setting to share a meal and good times with friends.
Once you have worked up an appetite on one of the numerous forest and coastal walks that the area is famed for, you'll be able to do justice to the exquisite food on offer. Ingredients are sourced locally as far as possible, quality and freshness being the criteria: the rusticity of a baked or roasted whole fish, with the taste of slightly burned herbs; a bouillabaise with potent mayonnaise-topped croutes, and sexy, salty oysters with their creamy flesh. Everything is presented simply, with light sauces and minimal garnishing - ideal for the modern, healthy lifestyle. If you aren't in the mood for seafood, you'll be equally well catered for with dishes such as beef fillet with red wine sauce and bone marrow, superb roast duck with orange sauce (rated the best on the coast !), pastas and vegetarian options.
An extensive, well-planned winelist complements the meal. The accent is on South African wines, and the selection changes regularly to accommodate interesting new discoveries. A good range of ports, South African premium brandies, single malts and grappas round things out.
Enjoying out-of-the-ordinary food is one of the pleasures of a holiday, and one of the most pleasant memories of a seaside holiday is of seafood with the loud, salty, savoury flavours of the sea. It's this memory that ensures the return of may visitors to The Med, year after year.
