The Big Easy Restaurant and Wine Bar was established in December 2008 in La Gratitude in Dorp street Stellenbosch. The building was built in 1798 by the first Reverend of Stellenbosch and boasts a blend of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. The building has been gently and tastefully renovated to provide the home for Ernie Els’s new signature wine bar and restaurant, lending his nickname and featuring memorabilia and photos through the years of “The Big Easy” doing what he does best- golf. Two of the dining rooms are named “The Golf Estate room” and “The Wine Estate room” after 2 of Ernie’s favorite interests.
The Big Easy pays unrivalled attention to serving a wide selection of more than 170 fine wines from Stellenbosch and surrounds to complement their superlative food. In addition, new discoveries from the local wine industry will please the most discerning connoisseur. This has been confirmed by the Platinum award from Diners club for the wine list in 2009. The most exciting news is that patrons will be able to enjoy wines from the cellars of the owners, at a significantly reduced mark-up. Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede and Guardian Peak Wines was instrumental in putting this impressive wine list together. The other owners, Johann Rupert (L’Ormarins), Paul Harris (Audacia) and Ernie Els (Ernie Els wines) have added their credibility to what will be a great success with connoisseurs. The fifth partner is Giuseppe Ciucci who supplies the restaurant with olive oil from his estate in Italy.
FINE FOOD AND FINESSE
The brasserie-styled eatery offers imaginative, classical food that smacks of local flavour, created by local born chef Craig Backhouse. A high level of originality shows in the small menu that feeds a healthy appetite in a memorable setting. Starters range from R45 to R70, mains from R75 to R170 and desserts from R45, palatable prices that will give an after taste of good value. Service excellence is the name of the game, with the staff providing slick yet friendly service backed by extensive knowledge of the menu, restaurant history and the beautiful winelands in general.
A WINNING RECIPE
The Big Easy Restaurant and Wine bar offers food that is “now” with the feeling of a time “when” quality and relaxation was the ultimate garnish at the start or end of a special day. Their mission statement – to achieve and maintain the same distinction in food, wine and service that la Gratitude inspires with its history, ambience and grandeur.
