Sitara North Indian Restaurant – formerly known as Ahara - specialises in North Indian cuisine. Situated in the upmarket suburb of Illovo in Johannesburg, Sitara sets a new standard in Indian cuisine in South Africa. Sitara takes Indian cuisine from the corner curry shop to a new cosmopolitan and modern re-interpretation.
Sitara specializes in various methods of Indian cooking, all with a great influence from North Indian flavours. The true art of Indian cooking lies in the subtle use and variation of spices which makes each dish exotic. Indian dishes are a blend of spices, herbs, vegetables, cheeses, grains, meats or seafood. The use of spices does not mean all food is hot and spicy as many people believe. We serve to your taste - mild, regular or spicy.
Indian food is known for its richness; for the use of spices, dried fruit and nuts. The Indians did everything in style and splendour; since they ate very rich food, they reduced the number of meals during the day - a reason why Indian recipes are rich in fat, carbohydrates and proteins. While flavour remains an integral part of modern day Sitara Indian Cuisine, we constantly strive to maintain a consistent balance of ingredients in these health conscious times. Our patrons find the wonderful flavour close to home - a testimony to authentic flavours and balance we seek to create.
A few favourite dishes at Sitara include the Lamb Rogan Josh (lamb cooked with Indian spices and yoghurt), the Chicken Vindaloo (spicy hot dish from Goa, made with coconut vinegar and lots of hot red chilli peppers), the Prawn Masala (prawn cooked in onion and tomato gravy and fresh cumin seeds), and the Paneer Tikka Masala (Indian cottage cheese barbequed in a clay oven and then folded into a special tomato sauce).
The restaurant environment itself is humble and unassuming, with a quirky mix and match of furniture and large mural of an Indian royal covering one of the walls. The large windows give the room a delightfully airy and light ambience and both indoor and outdoor seating is available. The ample parking space at the Illovo Post Office Centre makes visiting Sitara a hassle free experience.
