French Flair, Cape Country
Pastis is situated alongside the vineyards of the world-renowned Groot Constantia, the oldest homestead in South Africa and leading tourist destination. It exudes the same warm ambience and informal atmosphere as the Constantia Valley area. It has a proud tradition of hearty meals with French flair at affordable, local prices.
The bustling ambience and friendly interaction, together with traditional French cooking of the highest standard, promise an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant is decorated in 1920’s art nouveau, brasserie style and immersed in the strains of Edith Piaf, Francois Hardy and jazz legends. Outdoor seating in the summer sunshine looks out over the vineyards and a winding road that could be rising to an Alpine col. The indoor restaurant area is bedecked with vintage French posters and traditional guingan (ginham) tablecloths from Brittany.
The bar is on a separate level with a more contemporary feel in both style and music, complete with a warm winter fire for romantic evenings on quieter nights.
The menu is impressive in its range; quintessentially French with a South African flavour.
The restaurant is open from 09:00 until late, and starts the day with breakfast options such as the croque monsieur, traditional Anglaise, eggs benedict or florentine, and pain perdu (French toast).
Lunch offers salads (duck breast, niçoise, caesar, chicken with bois boudran sauce, rooibos-smoked crocodile) through sandwiches (ever popular french dip, shrimp & avo, crispy bacon and brie) and pâtes (pasta, such as a seafood ragout).
Dinner is a refined but relaxed occasion. Starters include a classic tomato tart provençale, escargot in parsley coulis, and french onion soup.
There is a healthy selection of mains; bouillabaisse, sole meunière, entrecote with béarnaise sauce and two signature dishes - the oxtail casserole and filet steak au poivre - to name a few. For dessert try the banana & mango tarte tatin, crème brulée, South African fruit clafoutis or cheese platter.
Most of the dinner menu can be ordered at lunch, and vice versa. Further flexibility is shown with bar menu options (burgers, ribs and chips, etc.) available in the main restaurant, and as at June ’07, children 12 and under eat free on Sunday evenings.
Pastis is truly unique and has to be experienced. Book now for dinner quoting reference 'Dining Out’ and you’ll receive a free carafe of the house wine on your arrival.
