The Capetonian-style cocktail bar Orphanage, situated in the popular Bree Street, is the perfect place to frequent if you fancy a glass of chilled wine, a cocktail or a craft beer after work. The venue is upmarket, stylish and sophisticated and boasts a delightful sharing menu featuring flavours from all over the world. Platter choices are the Artisan Cheeseboard, a Meze Platter, a Charcuterie favourite and some individual plates which can also be shared.
The interior boasts a splendid concept bar crafted out of dark wood and there is exposed brickwork throughout. The seating area has stylish tables which allow a wine bucket to be inserted into the middle of the table but still leaving enough room for the mouth-watering sharing platters. There is outside seating available which is exceptionally popular on warm evenings, so get there early if you want to enjoy the last rays of the sun.
The establishment’s name comes from its exact location which is the corner of Bree and Orphanage Streets. However the name Orphanage originates from the establishment of a home for orphans in 1918 (after the Spanish flu) at St Paul’s church across the road, now known as St Francis Children’s Home.
Orphanage is open from Saturdays to Thursdays from 5pm - 2am, Fridays from 3pm - 2am and Sundays (October to May) from noon to 12pm.
Head west on Nelson Mandela Boulevard/N2. Take the Strand Street exit. Merge onto Newmarket Street. Continue onto Strand Street. Turn left onto Bree Street. Orphanage Cocktail Bar is situated at 227 Bree Street.
