Mozambik restaurant in Silver Lakes is an extension of the flagship Ballito eatery’s approach to simple, relaxed eating inspired by the sandy beaches and turquoise blue ocean of Southern Mozambique.
Their concept is based on the authentic Mozambique “Barraca” which, in English, means “hut”. In Mozambique, whether at home or on the street, eating, drinking and chilling is the aspect of life we are familiar with from tourist brochures about Mozambique, and the way of life that is symbolised by a “Barraca”.
Mozambik restaurant, through its décor has thus aimed to recreate this chilled beach vibe by modelling the interior on the inside of a barraca.
At the Silver Lakes restaurant, the interior is spacious and airy – almost as much so as the outdoor eating area. Upstairs there is a lounge area complete with fireplace for those days when South Africa’s climate dashes one’s imaginings of a tropical beach.
The menu appeals to meat and seafood lovers equally, but in sticking with the tropical beach vibe, the fish dishes are especially recommended. For white meat fans, try the grilled chickens which are marinated in a unique Afro Porto flavour and served with jasmine coconut rice.
A delicious item on the seafood menu is hake or line fish served in a zambeziana sauce. That is, delicious mixture of coconut milk, chilli and lime drizzled over the fish. Another exotic-sounding item on the menu is espetada. You can choose between beef rump, chicken and prawn and baby calamari cubed and skewered and marinated in a sauce specific to each meat.
Alternatively you can stick with traditional Prego rolls or steak.
At Mo-zam-bik, the aim is to take all their patrons taste buds on a Mo-zam adventure. They do this in an explosion of taste. The purpose that drives the restaurant is to provide patrons with superb cuisine in an ambiance reminiscent of the spirit of adventure, flavour and the way of life in Mozambique.
No frills, some spills, plenty of laughs and an appreciation for the wisdom of simplicity is what we want to portray. So that’s what we have created – a chill zone reminiscent of hot sunshine, white sands, prawns and beer.
Mo-zam-bik – the spirit, the sound, the taste, the life, welcome you to their Barraca.
