Mamma Luciana's is large, colourful and very Italian. This trattoria has a great bar and an open kitchen with aromas sure to whet your appetite. Al fresco dining on the deck turns to long, lazy lunches and fun-filled dinners with sea-views. The menu is influenced by Mamma Luciana’s hometown of Modena in Italy and is distinctively Italian.
Antipasti include traditional Italian cuisine such as Melenzane alla Parmigiana (brinjal, mozzarella cheese and tomato oven baked), Lumache al Forno (snails doused in garlic butter baked in the pizza oven) and Calamari Mediterranean (olive oil, garlic, chilli, rosa tomatoes and fresh basil).
The Italian Flat Breads are very popular and are served on wooden planks with a variety of toppings. Mamma Luciana's offers all the traditional pasta options as well as a few homemade pasta dishes which include Pumpkin Panzerotti, Mammas Lasagne and Gnocchi. The Risotto (meatball, wild mushroom & porcini, seafood or steak & mushroom) are also worth a mention. A substantial pizza menu is available and all pizzas are cooked in the woodfired oven (along with most of the other menu items).
A few Main Course recommendations include the Chicken Marsala (chicken breasts cooked in a mushroom marsala wine sauce with tagliatelle), Pesce Veneziana (fresh line fish of the day with garlic, chilli, rosa tomatoes, herbs, white wine and fresh mussels) and the Filetto con Funghi (mushrooms, rosemary, garlic and chilli).
Don't forget to try Mamma's Tiramisu, the Italian Kisses or the homemade Italian Ice Cream to end off your meal.
“My Nonna ran a Locanda, which inspired me to start my restaurant career near Springs and then I moved to Durban. My unique style of food preparation and making homemade pasta is legendary. I was joined by my son, Marco, who opened Mamma Luciana's Restaurant on the Barea in 1999. We later, in 2010, introduced a branch in Glenashley attached with a deli and coffee shop. Now you can enjoy my homemade pastas in your own home.”
