The place to be | For Bohemians and Connaisseurs

Melville is a Bohemian suburb of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa named after the land surveyor, Edward Harker Vincent Melvill.

The area, along with Parkhurst and Greenside is one of the few areas of the Northern Suburbs to have cafés, restaurants and shops lining the streets rather than in enclosed shopping centres. There are over 30 guest houses in the vicinity, and is a popular stopover in Johannesburg for tourists. On 7th Street, there are numerous restaurants and bars and the Street is a popular hang-out for the cosmopolitan crowd.

La Luna | The Moon

We capture the spirit of Italian cuisine. If possible, the products will be local - olive oil from the Cape and mostly local wines. Pasta will be home-made or the best imported product available. Ravioli, tortellini, agnolotti and the likes will be produced manually in our kitchen. Find daily specials, quick and easy lunch options and a best value for money wine specials on our black board.

Many Italian recipes that I have collected over the years are from my early days in the kitchen, growing up in a multi-cultural neighbourhood between Italian and Turkish mammas that were cooking and willing to share their food (and recipes).

Starters at La Luna include Pan-Fried Prawns with garlic and lemon-parsley pesto, Baby Calamari and Caprese whilst Mains include options such as Pasta al Salmone (with fresh and smoked salmon in a rich lemon cream sauce), Pumpkin Raviolo (with brown butter, pine kernals and amaretti), Sirloin with olive tapenade (with grilled vegetables and big chips) and Fillet of Prime Beef (with balsamic jus, grilled vegetables and big chips).

For Dessert, those with a sweet tooth can enjoy options like Bayleaf Panna Cotta with lemon jelly and strawberries, Tiramisu Semifreddo and Ricotta Cheesecake with sliced orange preserve.

From the M1 (De Villiers Graaf Motorway): Take the M17 off-ramp onto Empire Road (M17) until you reach a t-junction with Annet Road (M18). Turn right into this road which will change into Kingsway. After the Johannesburg Country Club, turn right into Lothbury Road, which in turn will change into 7th Street. You will find the restaurant on the corner of 7th Street and 3rd Avenue.
