The Italian Kitchen is a delightful, family-friendly eatery in the heart of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. It successfully combines a chic décor feel with an all-ages-welcome atmosphere, which makes it appealing to a variety of people. The menu is broad and the specials change frequently to keep everyone on their toes.
The Italian Kitchen in Newlands is the sister restaurant to the original, and highly successful branch located in Tokai, opposite the Blue Route Mall. Thus the restaurant has some street cred to back it up – the Italian Kitchen in Tokai is a favourite among locals!
The décor style at the Newlands branch marries modern chic with homely comfort. There is a decidedly industrial theme given the exposed brick walls. The mismatched wooden furniture and non-fussy table settings neutralise the strong effect of the face brick, and the wooden photo frames hanging on the walls add a personal touch.
The menu consists of an extensive wine list which is updated regularly ensuring patrons never tire of the selection. The food side of things is no less appealing. There is a range of options from starters like flash fried Camembert to salads, gourmet pizzas, pastas, risottos and stock standard (but delicious) mains like burgers and wood-fired chicken fillets. The theme is no doubt Italian, with a distinct local South African twist.
For the young ones there is a distinct kiddies’ menu offering pasta Bolognese and roll-your-own pizzas. Children are evidently welcome, but parents are asked to respect other diners by keeping their brood under control.
Driving on the M3, take the Princess Ann turn-off towards Newlands. Continue onto Newlands Avenue and keep to your right. At the traffic lights at Dean Street, turn left and continue until you reach the corner of Main Street and Dean Street.
