New kid on the block on trendy Loop Street, House of H, has only been open for a few months and is already attracting regular customers.
This alternative establishment is set in what used to be an old parking lot and elements of the space can still be seen throughout the restaurant. An old VW mini bus serves as the bar, the old parking lines are still visible and exposed brick peeps out from dark painted walls. The interior is made up of recycled clothing and furniture, a mismatch of seating, interesting lighting and rows of herbs and vegetables which line the walls.
Heinrich Koen, the "H" in House of H and previous executive chef of the Madame Zingara Group, is the first to introduce this novel dining concept to the Mother City. There are no waiters or waitresses (just one busboy) and diners are given a point of sale (POS) card when they arrive and can order their meal directly from H at the kitchen counter. Heinrich provides valuable info about the meals on offer and offers suggestions where applicable. Once your food has been ordered (by swiping your POS card), diners can place their drink order with the barman and enjoy both at one of the communal tables in the restaurant.
The menu at House of H is varied and the portion sizes are very generous. We recommend ordering the Cheeseburger served on fresh ciabatta, with cheddar, tomato and pickles and crispy golden chips. Other items on the menu include steaks, chicken, burgers, a roast brisket sandwich, fish & chips and a wide range of delicious salads. All items on the menu are available as takeaway which also means House of H is perfect for lunch whilst at work. If you’re a Deluxe Coffeeworks fan, you’ll be please to know that you can grab your favourite cuppa from House of H as a takeaway or in the restaurant.
At the end of the House of H experience, diners just need to swipe their card and pay for their bill on their way out. This means no hassle with split bills. As if House of H isn’t interesting enough, they also have a barber on-site so you can get a haircut or a quick shave after your meal…we hear a tattoo artist is joining the team soon too!
Head northwest on Nelson Mandela Boulevard/N1/N2 toward Walter Sisulu Avenue. Continue onto Buitengracht Street/M62. Turn left onto Wale Street and then turn left at the 2nd cross street onto Loop Street. House of H will be on the left.
