Frits and Neil’s friendship started in primary school and at 16, the dream of opening a restaurant boasting the finest food and drinks the world has to offer, was born.

They then embarked on their own paths to gain the necessary life experience to finally create Baracas. Frits studied accounting and then indulged in his passion for coaching water polo. After teaching he worked on the family game farm, marketing the business overseas. It was this exposure to quality food and lifelong traveling that reawakened his passion for wine, beer and cuisine. Aware of Pretoria’s need for affordable quality, he vowed to bring his experiences to his home town.

 

Neil’s career started in England. His food journey flourished in some of the UK’s top pubs and restaurants. On returning to South Africa his passion continued to grow, as he trained to perfect his art with increasing technical ability. Continuing to work in the industry, he established positions in Browns and the highly acclaimed Pigalles in Melrose Arch, honing the skills that make him a chef of the highest caliber. He has since prepared meals for international celebrities and gained a ‘cult’ following established by numerous well deserved reviews. However, it is the creative freedom of his own restaurant that has finally equipped him with the platform to produce his own array of perfect dishes, which continues to grow.

This partnership is one built on shared interest and passion for food and wine. Neil cooks with only the finest ingredients, complemented with expert wine choices and an extensive understanding of flavour. The pair strives to bring you the perfect dish, ensuring The Harlequin and Baracas will only continue to flourish and grow. Expect a new experience every time you come.

 

Baracas - Beer & Wine Bar

Inspired by the clubs heritage and European influence, we have created an authentic pub, focusing on classic cuisine and atmosphere. However Baracas aims to do more. Our focus on quality and understanding of the importance of the experience of food and wine makes Baracas a cut above its competitors. We offer a tantalizing menu whilst preserving the tradition of good pub food.

We invite you to immerse yourself in our passion, by enjoying craft cocktails and beers. Try something new in our restaurant, complemented by our extensive wine list. From Pretoria

Travel on North Street towards Kieser Street and continue onto Rose Street. Turn left onto Parker Street and then right onto Soutpansberg Road (M22).

Take the slipway left into Hamilton Street and continue into Troye Street. After 1km, turn left into Rissik Street (M11) and continue to follow the M11. Turn right into Florence Ribeiro (Queen Wilhelmina) Avenue and after 800m, right into Totius Street. The destination will be on your right.
