Al Forno, located in vibey De Waterkant, is a newly established Italian café and bistro that has been turning the heads of locals for the right reasons. A meal at the eatery is akin to that of an Italian ‘ristorante’ where hungry diners can indulge in four delicious courses – from tantalising antipastos to decadent dolces. All the meals are made from scratch, using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes.

Patrons are warmly greeted at the entrance by the restaurant owner and chef, Dominique Rivet, who is often seen cooking up an array of authentic Italian dishes in his exhibition kitchen. The design of the restaurant is contemporary and open-plan, with doors opening up to an outside terrace. Diners can sit on modern, straight-back chairs around wooden tables or those who want an intimate dining experience can make a beeline for the plush corner couches. While waiting for your meal, take the time to look at the eclectic décor – a red clock adorns the wall and large decorative spoons hang from the ceiling.

With lunches served until six in the evening, patrons can enjoy light, ‘easy-on-the-stomach’ meals for early suppers. Choose from a wide selection of paninis, ciabattas and toasted sandwiches, topped with various cheeses, meats, and fresh vegetables.

As one might expect from an Italian eatery, the pizzas at Al Forno are cooked in a wood-fired oven and are simply delicious. The ‘Indiscusso’ comes highly recommended and is a tomato-based pizza topped with mozzarella, bacon, tomato and avocado. Patrons who are there for supper can nibble on some delicious appetisers such as ‘Haloumi Bruschetta’ or the thinly sliced 'Beef Carpaccio'. Mains are sizeable meals, and so patrons are advised to come hungry. The ‘Kingklip en Papillate’ is recommended to diners who are seafood enthusiasts. The fish is served with baby marrows, tomatoes, and onion in a zesty lemon butter.

Travel on the N2 towards Cape Town CBD. Once in Cape Town CBD, you will reach a set of robots (CTICC will be on your left). Continue straight at these robots onto Buitengracht Street and then turn right onto Riebeek Street. Turn left into Dixon Street and then turn right into Jarvis Street. The destination will be on the right.
