La Cuccina restaurant nestled in Hout Bay's Victoria Mall, on the corner of Empire and Victoria roads, is a delightful day-time deli that serves breakfast all day as well as sandwiches, home-made cakes and it specialises in delectable buffet meals, which are paid for according to weight. If you're on the run take-away "Ready Meals" are displayed in the deli fridge and these are all freshly prepared on the premises daily, as is everything else. "Ready Meals" are also available at Hout Bay's Spar where you can conveniently buy them after hours for family dinners that taste home-made. Additionally one can purchase delicious, incredibly presentable cakes for tea parties or special occasions as well as muesli, jams and savory spreads. The breakfast selection ranges from Eggs Benedict to scrambled eggs and omelets and French Toast. Breakfast Ciabatta Rolls are popular and include pesto, bacon, tomato, egg and rocket.

My partner and I reviewed this spacious, open-plan, relaxed, comfortable restaurant on a Tuesday at lunch time and it was almost completely full. The buffet section made my mouth water with its tempting display of about 25 divine looking dishes. Fortunately guests are not restricted to portion sizes as the plate is weighed and the average cost seems to be around R65 for lunch.

I loved the Pear, Rocket and Blue Cheese salad as well as the Beetroot, Onion and Cheese salad. Additionally the Lentil, Carrot and Celery salad was wholesome and nourishing and the Spicy Butternut roasted chunks were sweet and full of flavor. I enjoyed the Sweet Roasted Peppers in an assortment of bright colours with a slither of tender Chicken Breast, a portion of delicately smoked Angel Fish and a serving of tenderly cooked Pork Belly which is an excellent new addition to the buffet. Creamy Button Mushrooms and Creamed Spinach were also available as well as Chicken Curry, Quiche, Meat Lasagna and various options of potatoes prepared in interesting ways.

Each day lunch is available between 12:00 and 3:00pm and the buffet varies slightly according to seasonal availability. 65% of the options are vegetarian and 50% are gluten free.

Ian, the friendly owner who seemed to know almost everyone in the restaurant personally, served us the best hot chocolate in the world after our lunch. It was so thick and decadent that we had to eat it with a spoon and it tasted like hot chocolate mousse and contained 40% cocoa (which is very good for you). There was cream on the top and unbelievably this superb, magnificent drink costs only R20, complete with a heart shaped biscuit on the side.

Thereafter a platter of La Cuccina specialty cakes was served and it was almost impossible to resist tasting each of them. The Devil's Chocolate cake was an improvement on the best brownie I've ever tasted, with Pecan nuts added, as well as caramel and chocolate icing. The Carrot Cake was crammed full of fruit, carrot and nuts and dusted with icing sugar. The Chocolate Mousse Cake had three layers of sponge with two layers of mousse between them, as well as a decadent, thick, dark chocolate layer on the top. The Amaretto Cheese Cake was rich, delicious and unusual in flavor – a definite item to order again.

The welcoming restaurant is airy with high ceilings and a fabulous complement of friendly, helpful staff, who serve wonderful drinks like Strawberry Juice and rich and creamy Chai Latte. One can sit in the sunshine which pours into the restaurant or outside and take in the beautiful views of the valley while enjoying a meal, a tea-time treat, breakfast or a snack.
