Chef's Profile
Kunjani Wines – Executive Chef Lamek Mnisi,

Kunjani means “Hi, how are you?” This is our approach in wine and in dining. Food and wine that starts a conversation, a friendship. Executive Chef Lamek Mnisi is proof that perseverance prevails when you do what you love with true passion.

Chef Lamek’s deep passion for cooking was instilled from a young age. With his father being a chef he grew up knowing his way around a kitchen quite well, but it wasn’t until later in life that a simple “Crunchy” chocolate would launch Lamek into a food filled career path. He worked as a gardener while experimenting in the kitchen every opportunity he had. Being a gardener, Lamek has a true understanding of what goes into fresh, local produce and he continues to use this knowledge in his cooking to this day. Choosing to use local, seasonal produce. This has in tern led to a fresh and vibrant menu at Kunjani wines.

Lamek entered a cooking competition in Mpumalanga (where he would later win Young Chef of the year) and stole the show with his humble “crunchies”. He was accepted to study culinary arts at Singita, where he also held his first junior position. He continued to serve up his passion on a plate and soon moved into a Senior Sous Chef position at Molori Safari Lodge. Chefs follow the food and Lamek’s now food filled life lead him to Stellenbosch Cape Town, where he took a position a Senior Sous Chef at the prestigious Devon Valley Hotel.

Living just down the road Kunjani Owners Pia (Watermeyer) and Paul (Barth) frequented the establishment. The delicious food had them coming back more often than going to look for new spots to dine. When the decision was made to open a restaurant on Kunjani Wines the choice was an easy one as to who to snap up to help develop the menu and run the kitchen.

Chef Lamek has taken to challenge and our diners will agree that he is as vibrant and lively as his food.

Come say KUNJANI to a new way of dining.
