Chef Khutso Masethe

Born in Pretoria, grew up in Newcastle, studied Food & Beverages Management at Durban University of Technology and now working in Durban. I’ve been privileged to have worked with few of the most amazing chef in the industry, the likes of Peter Venter, Marco Nico to name the few. I’ve worked in different places around the country that influenced my cooking world view, places like Woodall Country House and Spa (Port Elizabeth), Havana Wine Bar & Grill (DBN) to name a few. I’ve been running my own catering company for past few years called My Gourmet Catering which gave birth to D’urban Burger Co. in 2016 now operating from Morningside Durban. We offer varieties of Moroccan inspired Style Burgers and more. I am a passionate foodie and has developed a natural flair over the years for fusing traditional South African dishes, with indigenous and modern ingredients to create interesting and classic dishes.

I have been able to plan, organize, leading and executing menus of a diverse nature and clientele over the years. I also gained my experience through working for different canteens namely Multi-choice Randburg- Fedics (2000), Diakonia Centre (2003-2005), YMCA (2007-2009) and while working for different trendy restaurants like Havana Grill and Wine bar (2005- 2006) and Woodall Country House and Spa (2006- 2007). My experience has led me to travel and work in different places like Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, City Tshwane, Newcastle, Swaziland, Libreville - Gabon and Durban, which exposed me to a wide variety of the cultural foods enjoyed in the Southern African Region.

My desire has always been to create brands and deliver quality flavour food to people; so, in the past I established and directed various companies, including Ilanga Elihle Catering which performed very well in Durban. Elanga Elihle Catering was a success and within 3 years grew to cater for over a thousand events during the period 2007 to 2009, with a customer base of over 250 companies, ranging from Corporate to Government institutions, Arbovet (Pty) Ltd which specialized Hospitality Consultant 2009 -2013 and My Gourmet Exclusive Catering Events (2013-current) as well as D’urban Burger Co. (currently).

I have been fortunate to participate in a variety of Culinary Art Exhibitions, Food & Crafts events, local markets and community development programs to mention but a few. I was selected as one of the regional finalists for the Unilever “Food Solution Chef of The Year” in KZN in 2014. In 2013, I had the privilege to represent the South African Culinary Arts at EAST3ROUT 2013 held in Swaziland. Then I also travelled with eThekwini Metropolitan Council to Gabon – Libreville to showcase South African Culinary Arts. I’ve been a part of the House and Garden Show also as D’urban Burger Co., Good Food & Wine Show and many more around the city of Durban.

I was recently part of Woza eNanda – Durban Bites, The Tourism Indaba, Ballito Rage 4U Festival, a number of Pop Up restaurants, Local Beer & Food Craft Festivals and help build up concepts within the hospitality industry.
