Grand Provence
GRANDE PROVENCE IN DETAIL

HISTORY

The history of this noble estate tells of freedom found and fortunes made, of valour, savoir-faire and fruitful ventures. It is a past as spirited as Grande Provence herself. Over 300 years ago, French Protestant, Pierre Joubert hid his bible in a loaf of bread and fled his hometown of La Motte-d’Aigues in Provence to avoid religious persecution.

In 1694 he arrived as the original owner of La Provence in Olifantshoek (Elephants Corner), later to be renamed Franschhoek. Having remarried another passenger on the Bergchina, (after his wife died on the same voyage) Pierre and his new wife, Isabeau Richarde soon prospered on their farm, acquiring other local farms that included Belingchamp, L’Ormarins,

La Motte and La Roche.

These farms are still in existence today. In 1732, at age 67, Pierre died, leaving generations to come with acres of vineyards and outstanding examples of Cape-Dutch architecture, of which the most notable is the manor house on Grande Provence.

The next prominent owner was Count Riccardo Agusta, after which two of estate’s wines are named. A keen nature conservationist and successful entrepreneur, Count Riccardo Agusta acquired Grande Provence in 1991, adding it the family’s many and varied holdings. The grandson of Italian aviation pioneer, Count Giovanni Agusta, Riccardo’s family dates back to 970 AD and has as part of its many achievements two of Italy’s largest industrial companies: Costruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta (Aircraft design & construction), and MV - Agusta, the world-renowned motorcycle production and racing company. Count Riccardo Agusta sold Grande Provence in April 2004.

THE OWNER’S COTTAGE AT GRANDE PROVENCE

The Owner’s Cottage at Grande Provence is a testament to period grandeur and contemporary luxury. Comprising the beautifully-appointed Cottage are four rooms, a deluxe suite, conservatory, lounge and spa pool area.

Blanketed in a palette of charcoal grey and white linen, the rooms beckon an indulgent experience. “Even though the rooms will be homely, they will also house discreet technology,” says Virginia Fisher - New Zealand based interior designer.

“The estate is imbued with a natural serenity. So when it came to landscaping, it was just a matter of enhancing this.” Carpeted with lush lawns and vegetation, the spa pool area punctuates the landscape with an elevated view of the surrounds.

Curtains of dark green hedges contrast with creamy travertine tiles and inset pebbles while white walls delineate the deck chairs and lounging areas, juxtaposing the cool and crisp swimming pool. Harmony permeates every angle.

THE RESTAURANT AT GRANDE PROVENCE

While the 18th Century Manor House and The Owner’s Cottage reflect their Huguenot heritage, The Restaurant and wine-tasting areas of Grande Provence project a chic industrial presence.

Steel joinery, galvanised metals and skylights distinguish this design approach. Interior Designer, Virginia Fisher explains, “In essence, Grande Provence is an estate of senses, providing guests with a full working farm experience, with spaces to be used and spaces to be admired, and these expanses of space allow us to do that. The two design styles are harmonised by a complementary palette, but time separates them.”

High-backed chairs upholstered in white leather draw the eye to the centre of the deep blue grey restaurant, while deep, slotted windows frame the picturesque view from the interior. The menus exude culinary excellence, with the signature dishes of the restaurant hitting all the right notes – fresh, palatable and delicious. Prepared from local fare and flavoured with global influences both modern and classical, the cuisine is characterised by a philosophy of innovation through passion and simplicity.

Leading off The Restaurant is the welcoming wine-tasting area. The bar dominates the centre of the room – striking in galvanised steel with black strapping. A touch of fun is evident with the tractor seat bar stools, while a fireplace and upholstered chairs soften the perimeter of the room, inviting guests to sit back and savour every sip.

THE JONKERSHUIS AT GRANDE PROVENCE

The Jonkershuis is an elegant extension to Grande Provence. Enjoy your own private dining experience under chandeliers made from recycled Angels Tears bottles. Stunning contemporary art adorns the walls.

Adjoining the main dining room is a beautifully decorated area providing a more intimate meeting area. The Jonkershuis is an ideal setting for special dinners and functions, small weddings, and boutique conferences. Its private kitchen can cater for up to 30 guests.

As with everything at Grande Provence, the decor is unique and sumptuous, yet fitting for the purpose of the room. The Jonkershuis needs to be seen to be believed.

THE GALLERY AT GRANDE PROVENCE

The Gallery at Grande Provence, showcases works by leading and emerging South African artists An extensive selection of artworks – including paintings, drawings, original prints, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, photography and traditional beadwork are available at The Gallery at Grande Provence.

The Angels Tears collection continues to be produced at the historic Grande Provence Estate in the beautiful and fertile Franschhoek Valley. The vineyard was established in 1694 by one of the first French Huguenot families to settle in the heartland of the famous Western Cape Winelands.

The Angels Tears legend goes: “In the village of Freinet in 18th Century France during a particularly warm summer, the grape harvest showed every sign of producing an outstanding vintage. True to promise an especially fragrant and ambrosial wine was created. The fame of this fine vintage soon spread afar and came to the knowledge of the Angels. Legend has it they stole into the village cellars by night and upon the wine touching their lips, wept tears of joy.” Angels Tears – honouring the legend, at Grande Provence Estate.

Delaire
Delaire is situated on a slope that runs down from a mountain peak on the farm, named Botmaskop. This peak of the Helshoogte Pass was their lookout point for ships entering Cape Town Harbour. The Sentry would then signal the settlers in Franschhoek of the ships arrival and they would be able to cart their produce to the harbour. This look out point became known as “Botmans Kop” which refers to Boatman’s Head, (Lookout point for the boats). One of our flagship wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon, carries the Botmaskop name.

Delaire aims for red wines that are bold in structure, with soft tannins and elegance whilst our white wines must capture the freshness of the harvest. However, in order to pick at optimum ripeness here in Banhoek Valley a certain amount of courage is called for as we can have to wait for up to three weeks after our Stellenbosch neighbours have picked.

Viljoensdrif
Viljoensdrift, owned by Fred and Manie Viljoen, is situated 12 kilometres from Robertson, on the banks of the Breede River, on the road to Bonnievale.

After an absence of 30 years from the winemaking process, this fifth generation Viljoens realized that they wanted to make the most of the quality and variety of their wine grapes, and so decided to return to this process. The cellar was unlocked and painstakingly restored. On 23 January 1998, the first grapes were removed from the stalks and crushed. The two brothers were enraptured by the result and gladly share their first products with all wine lovers.

Viljoensdrift
Two ranges are produced: a Standard Range as well as the River Grandeur Range. The Standard Range consists of: Colombar/Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz. The River Grandeur Range consists of: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay (barrel fermented) and barrel matured reds, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz. The name River Grandeur is derived from the magnificent Breede River which is the life-blood of Viljoensdrift.

In addition to wine-tasting visitors can also enjoy a relaxing hour cruising on “Uncle Ben”, the Viljoensdrift riverboat. An abundance of bird life and plants can be observed and Bass is plentiful. The banks of the river are covered in indigenous trees that contribute to the ambience of the trip.

Warwick Estate
Stan Ratcliffe bought the farm Warwick in 1964. He quickly started replanting the fruit trees on the farm to grapes. The farm is situated in the premiere wine-growing region of Stellenbosch and is blessed by cool winds that come in from the sea. The soils are deep hutton and clovelly decomposed granite with good water holding potential.

Warwick Estate
After delivering the grapes to other wineries for years Stan’s wife Norma started making wine in 1984. Norma was educated in Canada and learned winemaking in France. With her good spirit and determination Norma quickly became known as one of the best winemakers in the country. She was certainly one of the first female winemakers.
Norma and Stan’s son, Mike, took over the reigns of managing the estate in 2001. Mike has a very strong marketing background and a great vision for the estate.

Warwick specialises in the Bordeaux varieties and in 1987 introduced the blend known as trilogy. This wine enjoys popularity to this day as the estates flagship wine. Cabernet Franc which forms an integral part of the blend is also bottled on it’s own. Three Cape Ladies, a Cape blend comprising cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinotage was chosen in position #71 on the wine spectator top 100 wines of the year for 2004. Chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinotage are also part of the portfolio.

The Winemaking
Louis Nel joined the team as winemaker in 2002 and is carrying on the proud tradition. Ronald Spies is in charge of the vineyards and together with Phil Freese from America, is fine-tuning the vineyards to new levels.

Fryers Cove
The idea of a vineyard at Strandfontein, situated on the west coast of South Africa, originated in 1985 amongst the present shareholders. During his annual holiday at Strandfontein, Wynand Hamman told his brother in law, Jan (Ponk) van Zyl and his father in law Ponk van Zyl, of his ideas. Wynand was at that stage busy with his cellar technology course at Elsenburg Agricultural College to qualify as a winemaker. After long discussions, the above persons decided to start a vineyard at some time or another at Strandfontein as the climate is ideal for high quality, cool climate, wine production.
Fryers Cove Coast LineFryers Cove
The wines are of a unique character and are marketed under the Fryer’s Cove trademark and Wine of origin Bamboesbay. Presently it is the only vineyard in that ward. The public voted the Fryer’s Cove Sauvignon Blanc into first place as a South African Sauv. Blanc at the Sauv. Blanc Celebration in 2003. Currently a Fryer’s Cove Sauvignon Blanc and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend (called Richard Fryer) are marketed and from 2006 there will also be a Pinot Noir.
Fryer’s Cove is distributed by Wineworx locally. It is also exported to the UK, Belgium and Switzerland.
Wine tastings can be arranged by appointment.

Barrydale Wine Cellars
The history of Barrydale Wine Cellar and that of the region is closely intertwined and our product names have been chosen to reflect the rich history and beacons of the area Tradouw: Seven Falls and Misty Point for the wines and Joseph Barry Cape Potstill Brandy and Barry & Nephews Muscat Potstill Brandy for the cellar's popular potstill brandies.
Barrydale Wine Cellars
The grapes for the Tradouw range of wines are sourced from a small area measuring 15km by 3km in the Tradouw Valley between Barrydale and Swellendam. The area was declared a separate region of origin in 1990. All who have taken the road winding through the pass through the Langeberg Mountains will attest that the lush, rich natural beauty of the mountains is truly breathtaking.
All grapes delivered to the cellar come from a unique wine growing area at the northern foot of the Langeberg Mountains. In addition to the Tradouw Valley, producers are clustered in the Doorn River and adjacent years.
The Tradouw Pass connects Barrydale with the Swellendam area and the coast, allowing cool sea breezes to blow inland all year round, keeping Barrydale’s day and night temperatures down. (For wine experts this is good news as it creates the perfect conditions for dry cultivars to flourish; and visitors simply seeking respite, will welcome the drop in temperature in the Little Karoo.) Joseph Barry Cape Potstill Brandy
In addition to dry wines, the Barrydale region is exceptionally suited to cultivating grapes for brandy. St Emillion, the cultivar used to make cognac, which is also the most important component in the cellar’s Joseph Barry Cape Potstill Brandy, is at home in the sandy soil and prevailing cool, salty Indian Ocean breezes.

Boschkloof Wines
The farm is situated in the district of Stellenbosch in one of South Africa's prime red wine producing regions. The topography of the land consists of rolling hills with Stellenbosch mountains as a backdrop. Table Mountain and False Bay ocean can be seen from high points on the farm.
Boschkloof WinesBoschkloof Wines
BOSCHKLOOF is a boutique style cellar with the focus on the production of premium quality red wines and a barrel fermented Chardonnay. Grapes are selected by hand picking with the time of harvest based on ripeness and flavour balance of the fruit. Adequate skin contact is allowed during fermentation. Tight grained French oak barrels are used for fermentation of Chardonnay and maturation of red wines. Wines are carefully selected and blended before bottling. Minimum filtration is used. By focusing on only four grape varieties, we are able to adopt a single cellar philosophy and pursue our goal of continuous improvement in our wines. All our wines are certified and bottled on the farm.
BOSCHKLOOF – The People Involved
BOSCHKLOOF is a family owned wine farm and private wine cellar. It is managed by Dr. Reenen Furter, previously a radiologist by profession, his wife Dalene, and son-in-law, part owner and wine-maker, Jacques Borman. With over 15 years of experience, Jacques has the reputation of creating ever bigger and more complex wines – winner of numerous Gold Veritas awards and Gold at Vinexpo. His philosophy is that wine must be made as naturally as possible, away from over-fining and over-interference. His wine has a South African character, but classical forms of vinification will always be his benchmark. It was decided at the outset that a limited quantity of high quality or specialized wines would be produced and that the principal goal would be to ensure that each wine released would rank among the very best in its category.

Amani Vineyards
The modern winery of AMANI is on one of the hills in the Stellenbosch Winelands.
Few places have such breathtaking views including both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. From AMANI, The Cape of Good Hope, Stellenbosch and the Helderberg mountain ranges are seen.
The Southwesterly, Eastern and Southeasterly breezes caress the Southern and Eastern slopes of the hill bringing a cooler clime and greater moisture to our vines.
Wine is about where, when and with what ... It is about walking a road with plants being little seedlings to fully grown fruit producing vines. The creative touch of the winemaker turns these grapes into products of pleasure for the pallet.
AMANI wines are served in restaurants and homes from the locals in South Africa to the furthest corners of the USA and Europe.
The elegant range of Amani wines has proved to be a show-stopping, award-winning line-up. Amani debuted its range with their 1997 maiden harvest. This first vintage earned Veritas gold awards for the Sauvignon Blanc and Blanc Fume, the only wine in its varietal category to be awarded a Veritas double gold. It was also selected for the Blue train wine list. Amani's exceptional wines helped open new export markets in Canada, USA, Germany and England.
Wines from AMANI exhibit the rich flavours indicative of this region.
The AMANI tasting room (which is available during business hours: 09h00 - 17h00) is not a commercial one. We are not in the retail business at this time as our attention is focused on growing wine.

Weltevrede Wine Estate
160 km east of Cape Town lies the picturesque town Bonnievale. Surrounded by mountains, lush green vineyards as far as the eye can see and the life-giving Breederiver . Mist from the Breederiver rises in the early mornings over Weltevrede Wine Estate; it cools the grapes and concentrates the flavours. Even though one expects this area to have a hot climate, Bonnievale has a unique microclimate: temperatures are kept low with the mist in the mornings and the cooling winds in the afternoon.
Weltevrede Wine Estate
Bonnievale is known for its flaming red Karoo soil. An ancient riverbank was found a few feet under the Karoo soil and the chalk was ploughed to the surface. The chalk adds the minerally fresh character, for which the Robertson valley wines are so well known. Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs from this valley have won numerous international awards.
Terroir Expressed in its Purest Form
Philip Jonker has identified three soil types on his Estate and noticed different flavours produced from the soil types. He has now bottled these wines separately.
Significant is the immense difference in the Chardonnay flavours. From the broken shale on the cool south-facing slopes a Chardonnay was created, which breaks the mould. A lively, refreshing Chardonnay with complex flavours (often reminding you subtlely of a Chablis) named the Place of Rocks Chardonnay.
Planted on the original Weltevrede farm, is the Oude Weltevrede Chardonnay. The soil here is the red Karoo soil, mixed with chalk. This wine is the flagship of the Estate. An intense and full Chardonnay with weighty flavours of tropical fruit. Both of these Chardonnays received the same 8-10 months fermentation and maturation in French Barriques. The oak is well integrated and the terroir differences are incredible.
A lively Chardonnay was produced from the river's edge. The alluvial soil and river stones produced flavours of a fruit salad. Unoaked, this wine is a firm favorite in South Africa.
A Unique Fermentation Tank
A new cellar has been built on the Estate, incorporating unique fermentation tanks designed on the estate. The tanks were created for mainly red wines: Out of the need to do open tank fermentation ultimate skincontact, yet also to keep oxygen contact as low as possible. Open tanks were created with a lid hanging from the ceiling. A plunger was designed to move around above the tank. Previous plungers were static. The mobility helps to push through every inch of the cap, instead of only in the middle of the tank. Ultimate skin contact ensures ultimate flavour extraction. The lid is then lowered and fixed on the tank to minimize air contact. Philip practices New World winemaking with cool fermentation tanks, minimum air contact, concentrating on fresh fruity wines with layers of complexity. He has the knowledge of three generations of winemakers behind him, balancing New World fruit with Old World finesse.
When you plan to visit Bonnievale, feel free to contact Weltevrede for information on their guesthouses (which overlook the vineyards and Breederiver). Bonnievale (30 km from Robertson, Swellendam and Montague) offers several trips on the river, has numerous wine estates to visit and is situated right off Route 62 (the alternative route to Oudtshoorn and the Garden Route). You can taste the crispness of the fresh air and the warmth of the people and sun in their wines.

Morgenhof Estate
Morgenhof Wine Estate celebrates 10 years of excellence!
Under the dynamic guidance of Madame Anne Cointreau-Huchon, Morgenhof Wine Estate has gone from strength to strength in the last decade. Challenges of the undulating vineyard are more than competently managed by the talented duo, Rianie Strydom (Cellarmaster) and Pieter Haasbroek (Vineyard Manager).
This previously sleepy Stellenbosch farm has over the last ten years developed into a leading brand both locally and internationally. Phenomenal success in world ratings, prove that they are indeed a world player.
Morgenhof
This prestigious estate puts extreme emphasis on terroir based wines, with the resultant award winning wines culminating in the achievement of the trophy for the Morgenhof Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (out of 145 Cabernets entered) at the Fairbairn Capital Trophy show 2003. This trophy competition is judged by local and international panel and had an entry of 916 wines - an increase of nearly 15% on 2002! Only 19 gold medals were awarded.
This is not the Cabernet Sauvignon's only accolade. It has been rated as a highly recommended four and a half star wine by Decanter magazine - June 2003. This wine is also flying high with SAA in their business class section!
The success of the multi-faceted farm does not end here. The Estate Wine - Premiere Selection has been highly regarded since its 1995 maiden vintage, achieving 5 stars in John Platter as well as a double gold Veritas (South Africa's most recognized national show) It has proved to be consistent in later vintages being highly rated in Wine Enthusiast, Decanter - top new world red wine, Wine and Spirit International - top 30 red icons of Stellenbosch and Wine Magazine South Africa. The 1999 vintage is currently available in limited quantities, having received four and a half stars at The Fairbairn Trophy Show.
Morgenhof Wine Estate's star appeal does not end here, but extends to include the Merlot, winning awards yearly since its inception in 1993.
Morgenhof Estate Chenin Blanc has been an industry leader in the revival of this grape variety in South Africa, winning the very first Wine Magazine Chenin Blanc Challenge in 1997. It went on to shine at Vinexpo 2001, where the 2000 vintage was rated in the top ten newly discovered wines. The 2002 vintage is overwhelmingly full of character in true Morgenhof style.
The continuing dedication and enthusiasm of the Morgenhof team, to produce wines of superlative quality will always be at the forefront of Morgenhof Wine Estate's success.

Bottelary Wine Route
"Quality makes friends"
February marked another milestone for the Bottelary Wine Route - the bottling of their first Bottelary Hills/M23 range, a Sauvignon Blanc 2002. The first red wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, was bottled in April.
According to the Marketing Manager of the initiative, Stephan Smith, the rich history of friendship in the region served as a springboard for the development of a new range of wine sourced from farms in the area. Three farms are currently supplying wine for the range - Kaapzicht, Bellevue and Goede Hoop - but Smith says plans are to eventually incorporate all farms in the region, depending on the availability of wine.
The wine will be labeled in two ranges: The Bottelary Hills range, the flagship wine that will be made from selected wines, and the M23 (derived from the road code) easy-drinking wines aimed at the entry-to-middle level consumers. According to him they are planning to eventually build their own cellar in the Bottelary Hills.
Participating farms submit their wines to a blind tasting panel, which will taste all available wines from the region and select only the best quality for their range. The two ranges will be marketed nationally, but according to Smith the Bottelary Hills range will be more exclusive and their marketing and selling drives will thus be geared towards that.

The emerging Bottelary region is well known for its exceptional quality, which results in wide local and international recognition. Ten Bottelary wine farms received Veritas awards last year - a total of 2 Double Gold, 6 Gold, 18 Silver and 23 Bronze medals.
Despite the area being well known for Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, top quality white wines are also starting to emerge. The Chenin Blanc Challenge 2000 and joint 2001 winner, Kanu, apparently sourced their wine from the Bottelary region.
The Winemaker and viticulturist of Flagstone Winery, Bruce Jack, sources red and white varieties from the Bottelary region. "The special combination of de-vigorating, well-drained soil and the unique climate ensures that the vines are balanced and deliver extremely concentrated berries, which are packed with flavour. The Bottelary region is without doubt one of the very best areas in the Western Cape to produce world-class grapes," he says. Editor of Wine magazine, Fiona McDonald, says, "The Bottelary region has been largely overlooked in the past, but during the last year or so farms like Kaapzicht, Mooiplaas, Hazendal, Hartenberg and Bellevue have definitely been producing the goods".

Waterford Estate
The Ord and Arnold families dreamed of a wine farm, where life is cherished, the seasons mark time and the fruit always reminds of blessings, abundance and the beauty of nature.
The perfect land was found in a place that stirred the hearts of each person who breathed its air, nestled in the Helderberg range, trickling streams of crystal water down to the then-imagined homestead.
The children saw it as a place of water, coolness in the heat, elixir of the vines. So the families bought the land in the autumn of 1998, built the dwellings and winery from the stone and timber it provided, and called the estate Waterford - a celebration of its succulence for each generation to come who will treasure this farm.
The realising of this dream was the birth of the Waterford Way, which is more than the farm and its wines. It's a philosophy that honours prosperity, celebrates life, food and wine, and loves family and friends with passion.
When you meet Jeremy Ord (down-to-earth technology magnate) and Kevin Arnold (poetic, award-winning winemaker), you'll understand this fully, as these warm, generous people are an inspiration. Every guest to the farm is made to feel a part of the Waterford Way, and those who have visited are drawn back often not only to the sumptuous wines, but to the heart and soul of Waterford.
The Ord and Arnold families would love to have you visit their farm, so please contact the estate to find out more about wine-tastings.

Webersburg Estate
Nestled against the majestic Helderberg slopes of Stellenbosch, Webersburg Estate lies in the heart of the Cape's famous wine region. Adjoined to the world-renowned Alto and Rust & Vrede estates, Webersburg enjoys the ideal terroir conditions for high quality grape production. A portion of the historic wine estate Groenerivier dating back to 1693 was acquired by the Weber family in 1996. The Estate now named Webersburg is widely recognised for its award winning Cabernet Sauvignons.
Webersburg Estate
Of the Estate's 72 hectares, 38 hectares are planted with red wine cultivars. After harvesting, the grapes are taken to Meerlust Estate where the wine is made under the supervision of Giorgio Dalla Cia. The wine is then matured in French Oak barrels at Webersburg's maturation cellar.
The philosophy behind Webersburg strictly follows the classic French tradition: low production per hectare, controlled fermentation and high percentage of new barrels every vintage gives the wines great structure and complexity with great finesse and good aging potential.
We are presently building a maturation cellar with tasting area, which should be completed by October 2003.
We are proud to announce that our 1997, 1998 and 1999 all received four and half stars in the John Platter Guide.
