Previously know as Ginja & Shoga, but now Ginja has tranform to new name and new venue. Please watch this space for more details.
Situated in the trendy Bo-Kaap district of Cape Town, Ginja occupies the ground floor of an old two storey building. First impression of the interior is that it has an "old warehouse" feel with its high ceilings and heavy wooden doors. However, the rich red walls and art deco fittings combine very effectively to produce a French Brasserie look which is both intimate and inviting.
After some thoughtful deliberation, "Ginja" was chosen as a suitable name for the establishment, based on the fact that root ginger is used extensively in both Eastern and Western cooking and effectively brings the two cultures together from a culinary perspective.

Acclaimed chef Mike Bassett heads up the kitchen which offers an exciting menu of fine dining based on international fusion cuisine. The well planned menu is both interesting and impressive with wonderful combinations such as the Double Lamb Cutlets with White Miso Gorgonzola Sauce and seasoned English Spinach, or the Venison Loin with Bitter Chocolate, crushed basil Potatoes and Shaved Vegetables.

Following on the success of Ginja, Gary Wright and Mike Bassett have once again put their talents together and created Shoga (the Japanese word for "ginger"), in the spacious first floor area directly above Ginja. The theme of Shoga is more a bistro/bar, but the décor again makes use of strong colours combined with exposed brickwork and high ceilings, which are in keeping with the "warehouse feel". The restaurant has two main features - the long counters which run parallel down either side which will accommodate casual diners (and cocktail drinkers), and the wood-fired ovens which will be used extensively in the preparation of the tandoor and pizza section of the menu. Much thought has gone into the layout of the interior and in addition to the tables in the main section of the restaurant, there is also a slightly more formal area, with low comfy couches for relaxing either before or after a meal.
