It's impossible to give an exact date for the invention of the Tortilla but according to Mayan legend this could be as early as 10 000BC. At San Julian in Rose Street (Cape Town) the authentic Corn Tortilla (which is part of Mexico's ancestral heritage) can certainly be enjoyed, prepared by brothers Arturo and Ricardo Garcia. The Garcia family left Mexico to settle in Cape Town in June 2010 and according to Arturo "we prepare only traditional, authentic Mexican dishes - best enjoyed with Tequila."

Although the Mexican menu includes a translation guests can always discuss featured items with any member of the Garcia family. San Julian is a hands-on operation with almost every member of the Garcia family involved, either on the floor serving with a smile or in the kitchen preparing delicious Mexican fair. Traditional Mexican music is played and on occasion Mr. Garcia will be singing and playing on his guitar.

The interior decor is traditional and there are decorative items like Sombreros on a sideboard and Mexican crosses in various colours on the walls. There is a bar area with minimal seating and the kitchen area is open so that diners can see the food preparation process. Everyone is incredibly warm, welcoming and hospitable and the venue has a reputation for making the best Margarita's in town.
Some of the featured items are Nachos, Coiled Tortillas, Tacos (filled corn Tortillas), Tampiquena (barbecued meat with red rice, beans, guacamole) and Tortillas (either handmade with corn or flour) accompanied by barbecued meat, guacamole, mozzarella, onion, coriander. In order to serve dinner the family arrives at the restaurant at lunch time in order to freshly prepare everything for the evening's trade. For the purpose of authenticity some ingredients are sourced from foreign destinations and imported.
