There aren’t too many places where you can enjoy world class food in a convivial, eclectic, informal environment. After years spent in London, Edinburgh, Europe, America and Cape Town owners Tom Hughes and Martin Jakoby felt that there was a real gap in the Jozi market for the unpretentious - yet quality - establishments that are so favoured overseas. You don’t need collared shirts and linen table cloths to appreciate truly great food and wine, and the entire ethos behind their restaurants is to allow people to relax, unwind, enjoy and savour.
Solid wood rustic tables of varying sizes and shapes meet a mis-match of antique chairs. A collage of old photos, paintings and knick-knacks adorns a wall of vintage Toile wallpaper, while the huge antique gilded mirror reflects the exquisite beaded chandeliers and exposed rafters.

Laze on a Victorian velvet chaise-longue on the large summer deck and just drink in the buzzing atmosphere. For those that fancy a cocktail (or three) the adjoining cocktail bar has scarlet rafters, a pressed metal wall and hand-painted bar. Funky tunes and an array of delicious cocktails make this the perfect place to unwind and dance away the stresses of the day.
It might seem obvious but truly great food starts with exceptional ingredients, Chef/owner Tom Hughes is fanatical in sourcing the very best ingredients available and, wherever possible, ensures the produce he uses is organic, free-range and sustainable.
Although classically French trained at the famous Cape-based Kevin Warwick chef school, Tom’s travels have brought a truly fusion element to his menu and his signature dishes include:
|
|
Duck, Ginger and Hoisin Spring Rolls, Mozambiquan Crab Fettuccine with Coriander, Chilli and Lime, Slow Roasted Pork Belly with Pancetta and Asparagus, and Belgian Hot Chocolate Pudding with Vanilla Bean Ice-cream.
The menu changes seasonally to compliment both the fresh seasonal ingredients and the weather.
All the dishes show optional wine or beer recommendations, which have been meticulously matched to bring out the flavour of both food and wine. Furthermore, the vast majority of the wine list is available by the glass to ensure that guests can enjoy a variety of wines without being obligated buy a bottle.
