Much of Stellenbosch is steeped in history with many old buildings dating back several hundred years is fortunate to be housed in one which is well over 200 years old. The building was originally a coach house and the façade has been well preserved despite being badly damaged by fire some years ago when it lost its thatched roof. Basis Bistro has been owner managed since April 2005 and is fortunate to have an excellent team of loyal staff who take pride in what they do.

The ambience at Basic Bistro can best be described as intimate with a compact cottage style interior and petite front patio overlooking the hustle and bustle of this popular street (not ideal for mothers with push chairs and toddlers) Besides building up a very regular clientele from Stellenbosch and surrounds, Basic Bistro attracts a large number of passing tourists thanks to its excellent location in the heart of this delightful town. Cool off under the shady oaks on a hot summer’s day with a deliciously refreshing Berry Smoothie or perhaps a well chilled glass of white wine.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner the menu is broad in its appeal, ranging from a selection of freshly baked cake and toasted sandwiches, to more substantial fare for lunch or dinner with plenty of Asian influences. Popular dishes on the main menu are the Dukka Chicken pasta with blue cheese, Thai vegetable stir fry with noodles, and the Penang coconut chicken curry. There is also a Specials Board (which changes fortnightly) which displays a tempting array of fusion style dishes such as spicy fish cakes with Thai dipping sauce and grilled duck with sesame soya dressing. For those that enjoy a good old fashioned burger, Basic Bistro’s are definitely the best in town!

From Cape Town: Take the N1 towards Worcester and turn unto the R304. From the R304 go straight into Bird Street, which will turn into Mill Street after the traffic circle. Turn left into Church Street.
From Strand and Somerset West: Take the R44 (first Broadway Boulevard and then Strand Road) through Somerset West all the way to Stellenbosch. In Stellenbosch turn right into Dorp Street, left into Andringa and then into Chruch Street.
