In the years that it has been open, La Strada Ristorante in Hillcrest has become justifiably well-known. A relaxed, elegant interior is dominated by the custom-made wine rack. Warm Tuscan tones ensure an atmosphere that is conducive to either intimate dinners or long, lazy lunches. The deck allows for wonderful al fresco dining in the clear Durban sunshine. The beautifully tiled wood-burning pizza oven is the restaurant’s pride and joy, constructed in the age-old Italian style and the Ferrari flags adorning the hand crafted bar are vigorously defended.

The menu is extensive with a focus on traditional Italian food. The owners insist on quality ingredients to ensure a fabulous final product and have combined local and imported products with a perfect result. All pastas are handmade on the premises. The pizza is rapidly becoming known as the best in Durban with the dough recipe a very closely guarded secret. Stay safe with a traditional Quattro Stagioni or branch out and try one of the unusual Gourmet Pizzas. For the carnivores there are aged steaks and a wide variety of fish and chicken dishes. Specials are changed frequently to ensure that regular customers always have something new to try. The wine list is extensive without being daunting and Hein is always around to suggest the best bottle to go with your meal. In 2009 they were awarded the prestigious Diners Club Platinum Award for their winelist.

La Strada is also the perfect venue to bring the kids to. Special benches allow them to make their own pizzas. There is live music on Thursday night with the last Saturday of every month playing host to a Dinner Dance. Carvery is served on a Sunday lunch and Pensioners receive a 20% discount at lunchtime Tuesday to Thursday.
La Strada is driven by youthful passion – for people and for food. The restaurant is family-friendly rather than kid-friendly, allowing all ages to relax in a comfortable, casual environment. And judging by their success, they have done so admirably, despite the birth of their first baby late last year. So follow the La Strada motto. Don’t eat to live…LIVE TO EAT!
