Literally translated L'Epis Dorè means "sheaf of gold" which brings to mind fields of shimmering wheat waiting to be harvested. It is indeed an appropriate name for this gem of an establishment, which produces some of the best baguettes and croissants in Pretoria. Situated in the Greenlyn Village in Menlo Park, L'Epis Dorè is like an oasis in the desert. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of this busy suburb, it has a delightful shady outside seating area that looks out onto a beautiful garden. Manicured lawns, fragrant lavender bushes, olive trees and a miniature vineyard of newly planted vines, create a harmonious and tranquil environment in which to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, or lunch with family and friends.

French born Christophe Dubois brings continental charm to this restaurant and together with the hospitality and energy of his wife Miranda (a born and bred South African meisie) has built up a fine reputation for the excellent quality of fare, whether it be a truly authentic Italian cappuccino or a freshly baked croissant with ham and cheese. The service is friendly and laid back, and Christophe specializes in outside catering, as well as organizing wine tasting evenings and a special dinner once a month. Picnics are also prepared to eat either at the café or to takeaway depending on your preference.

L'Epis Dorè is one of those establishments where everything on the menu looks so inviting it is genuinely hard to make a decision on what to order. Besides the legendary croissants and crepes there is a delicious and unusual combination of 3 cold soups served in bread, and an impressive baby beetroot and goats cheese salad with Parmesan tuile and mint pesto dressing. Whilst Mediterranean ingredients feature strongly on the menu, there are a few Eastern specialties for those who prefer something a little more spicy. The Teriyaki Chicken and vegetable salad with wonton noodles is highly recommended. Save room for something sweet from the mouth watering selection of patisserie items such as the Lemon Tart or Chocolate Eclairs.
