Picture Tare Panda in Umhlanga Ridge, Umhlanga, Northern Suburbs, Durban and Surrounds, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa Literally translated Tare Panda means “lazy panda” and relates to one of the biggest cartoon characters in Japan and Hong Kong where the logo appears on various products. The lazy panda is associated with making people feel kind and happy which is the aim of the Tare Panda Restaurant.

Owner Michael Huang and co-partner Bruce Lin wanted to establish a restaurant where the Taiwanese community could feel “at home” and put their ideas together to create Tare Panda. According to Michael “it is the closest you will get to an authentic Japanese restaurant experience”.

In doors the seating varies from standard tables to traditional Japanese well-seating, along with the usual Sushi Bar and Teppanyaki seating where diners can watch the Chefs expertly preparing their meal. There are also several VIP function rooms available for those who prefer a more intimate dining experience, and these rooms have been beautifully decorated with impressive glass partitions and superb redwood floors.

Apart from the well known Sushi, Teppankyi and Tempura methods of preparation, Tare Panda also offers Shabu Shabu where diners are given a pot of soup in which they cook thinly sliced pieces of meat and fish. Popular starters include the Miso Soup or the deliciously crisp Spring Rolls, and the Peking Duck is definitely a Chef’s speciality. The well stocked bar offers an extensive selection of South African wines as well as the traditional Japanese Sake and imported beers from China, Japan and Singapore. Tare Panda also offers a range of refreshing Smoothies made with seasonal fruits which are highly recommended.
