The Aubergine originally existed as two separate restaurants and are now combined in one location under the guiding hand of owner/chef Chris Black. The resulting menu reflects various influences showing classic European dishes side by side with Asian and Italian specialities. This combination of fine dining and global cuisine has been given the verdict of "rare classic dishes of great integrity created by a virtuoso talent".

Chris says "the chef's challenge is to use only fresh ingredients in the preparation of meals, nothing is frozen and every sauce is prepared when needed. We work with a few simple flavours and classic food combinations that work well together".
The décor is modern, clean lined and minimalistic, featuring a recently completed wine cool room. The glass walls display the extensive collection of wine which Aubergine takes extremely seriously. Wines receive an "Aubergine" rating and feature mid-range rather that premium labels. The selection has been carefully thought out to compliment the wide variety of taste sensations offered by the menu.

Aubergine is a busy restaurant which is serious about giving diners an unforgettable classical experience, while introducing them to new flavours.
The menu leads naturally from starter, to main course to dessert. Starters include: Chargrilled Falkland Island calamari in a hot and sour Nahm Jim dressing, sweet peppers, roasted peanuts and a salad of mixed organic greens with gorgonzola, fresh pear, candied pecan nuts and red onion, lemon vinaigrette. Some mains course examples being: Triple roasted crispy free range duck, braised red cabbage, crisp bacon and hazelnuts, honey and 5 spice sauce, Sardinian inspired lamb shank, wild mushroom and smoked butter risotto, honey glazed carrots, braising jus.
The Aubergine also offers a three course lunch menu for R99, which changes each month.

From Durban Central - Travel along the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg. Take the M13/Pinetown/PMB turnoff. Follow along the highway until you see the R103/Old Main Road/Hillcrest East turnoff. Turn right into Old Main Road. You'll find the Hillcrest Centre on your right.
From Pietermaritzburg - Travel along the N3 towards Durban. Take the Assagay/Hillcrest/Shongweni turnoff and turn left into Kassier Road. Follow this road until
you get to the R103/Old Main Road. Turn right into this road. You'll find the Hillcrest Centre on your left.
