Saxenburg Wine Estate has long been regarded as one of the Cape's premier wine producers, but it is also home to the Guinea Fowl Restaurant which opened in 1991 and has achieved widespread acclaim for the fine dining it offers in gracious surroundings. The restaurant is situated in what was once an old cellar and is most attractively decorated in warm shades of yellow with an African theme to the soft furnishings and artwork, much of which is for sale. An interesting feature of the restaurant are the impressive chandeliers which are surrounded by unusual mirrored panels and reflect the light perfectly in the evenings bringing glamour and elegance to the interior.

The restaurant opens onto a large vine-covered terrace surrounded by a glorious garden and panoramic views of Cape Town and the mountains. The exceptional setting makes the Guinea Fowl a sought after venue for private functions and in particular wedding receptions. A recent addition to the Estate is a thatched lapa with its own bar area which offers casual dining throughout the day. From its elevated position next to the old slave bell, the lapa is an ideal venue to enjoy pre-dinner drinks before a function and watch the sun go down over the distant mountains.

Patron Leon Romer is an accomplished Chef and reputedly serves some of the best linefish in the winelands. Guinea Fowl is of course his signature dish and can be either had as a starter in the form of a superb pate or the famous Guinea Fowl Salad, or alternatively as a main course when the Guinea Fowl is braised with bacon strips, mushrooms and onions. Other game dishes include pan-fried Springbok liver and an excellent Venison Carpaccio, both of which are very popular with overseas visitors. Vegetarians have not been over-looked and have three excellent dishes to choose from which can all be served either as a starter or main course portion. To complement your meal choose from a renowned selection of red and white wines and the wine list boasts sought after Saxenburg Private Collection vintages that are rarely found elsewhere.
